Deputy Mayor stresses need for balance as Steinbach reviews grant requests

Steinbach City Council will be spending part of the summer reviewing a growing number of grant requests from local organizations. Many groups are citing rising costs and are appealing to the city for additional funding to continue their programs and services.

However, Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra says Council must weigh each request carefully, especially as the city itself faces higher operating and infrastructure costs.

Faith, music and lifelong friendships: Former MCI students remember what made the school special

After more than a century of shaping young lives through faith, education, music, and sports, the Mennonite Collegiate Institute (MCI) will be “pausing operations” at the end of June. The school’s Board of Directors made the announcement earlier this week, citing declining enrollment and financial challenges as the reasons behind the tough decision.

Airdrie's Canada Day forecast brightens as thunderstorm watch lifted

Environment Canada lifted a thunderstorm watch that had been in place for parts of southern Alberta Saturday afternoon, clearing the skies and easing concerns about weekend weather disruptions.

Now, the forecast shows uninterrupted sunshine through July 1, just in time for Airdrie’s largest annual celebration.

Exploring careers in agriculture: Think Ag 2025 inspires Sun West students

On June 5, 2025, about 30 high school students from across the Sun West School Division got a firsthand look at career opportunities in agriculture beyond the traditional farm with Think Ag 2025, a dynamic event hosted by Sun West in partnership with the Regina District Industry and Education Council.

The day-long event, held at the Sun West Learning Centre in Rosetown, brought together students from 12 schools including Kindersley Composite, Outlook High, Rosetown Central High, and Biggar Central School 2000.

Severe storm watch in effect as hail hits Dominion City, rotation spotted near St. Malo

Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for parts of southeastern Manitoba, including the Rural Municipality of Hanover, Steinbach, Niverville, and Grunthal. The alert was issued Saturday afternoon and remains in effect as unstable weather conditions continue across the region.

A humid and unstable air mass over the Interlake, Red River Valley and eastern Manitoba is creating conditions favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening.

Update: Severe weather watch issued for Airdrie; neighbouring counties under a warning

Environment Canada has lifted a series of severe thunderstorm watches that were in place for Airdrie, Crossfield and several parts of southern Alberta Saturday.

The weather agency had warned that thunderstorms forming along the eastern slopes of the Rockies could track southeast through the evening, with the potential to bring damaging winds, torrential rainfall and hail up to the size of a loonie.

“The risk of severe thunderstorms will diminish this evening,” Environment Canada said in a 2:24 p.m. update.
