WFPS battle pair of early morning fires

It was a busy morning for Winnipeg fire crews as they battled a pair of house fires just hours apart. 

The first fire broke out just before 1:30 a.m. in a two-storey home in the 200 block of Ruby Street. 

Smoke was seen coming from the house when firefighters arrived. It took about a half-hour to get the fire under control.

Everyone was able to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported. 

It's believed the fire was accidental, caused by an electrical malfunction.

Leader's new water storage tank nears completion

The Town of Leader's new $1.9 million water storage tank, a crucial infrastructure project, is set to be completed by the end of October. Construction began in April, and progress has been steady. The new tank, painted in a modern regent gray to match the adjacent Water Treatment Plant, will soon become the town’s primary water storage facility, replacing the iconic yellow tank that has served the community for decades.

Wanted person could be in Willow Creek

The Alberta RCMP took to Facebook recently to let people know that a wanted man could be in the M.D. of Willow Creek.

Beuford Plaited Hair is wanted by the RCMP for various crimes, including invitation to sexual touching and as luring a child, but his last location is currently unknown.

His known areas of activity are in Willow Creek, Cardston, Siksika Nation, Sundre, Sunchild First Nation, Standoff, and Blood Tribe.

City of Estevan gives new report on downtown revitalization as season shifts

The City of Estevan is laying out its latest update with some new changes on the way for sidewalks on one block of the city.

In their update, dated September 11, the city gave out the following updates:

Access and Traffic Accommodation:

Sidewalks remain open with the exception of areas where excavations for service connections are necessary. In the next two weeks, limited sidewalk access will be in effect for the north side of the 1100 block. Fencing has been installed and signs are in place for both pedestrians and vehicles to take detours.

Tickets for first ever combined men's and women's curling championship go on sale this weekend in Kindersley

Tickets will go on sale for the much anticipated first-ever Saskatchewan Men's and Women's Curling Championship at the West Central Events Center during Goose Festival weekend from 1-4 p.m.

The 2025 Sasktel Tankard and 2025 Viterra Scotties will be hosted in Kindersley Saskatchewan January 20-26. The event features the top men's and women's curling teams competing for their respective titles at the same time inside West Central Events Centre

Previously the championships took place at different times and often in different venues. 

Kindersley sees the introduction new financial literacy course from Government of Saskatchewan

Starting in the 2024-25 school year, all Saskatchewan students entering Grade 10 will be required to complete a new course, Financial Literacy 10, as part of their graduation requirements. The curriculum aims to equip students with essential financial knowledge and skills, helping them make informed financial decisions and contribute to the province's long-term economic growth.

At the start of a new term for the Four Winds Learning Centre in Punnichy, students and staff gathered for a celebration and traditional learnings revolving around a central feature of traditional indigenous life – the tipi. 

On Wednesday morning, September 18, everyone gathered under the ornate mural in the commons area of the Centre to listen to the teachings of Elder Ed Bitternose. The intent had been to erect a tipi on the grounds while Ed shared his knowledge, but a rainy morning put the construction on hold.

Kerrobert joins the long list of west central communities getting access to the virtual physicians program.

In recent years, these communities have been hit hard by disruptions in healthcare services, primarily due to staffing shortages and a lack of available doctors. The strain on the healthcare system has become increasingly evident, with recently released documents revealing ongoing pay issues for doctors and other healthcare staff. These issues were highlighted after the second failed attempt to implement the AIMS (Administrative Information Management System) rollout.
