2 males face weapons and drug related charges

Two males are facing charges following a search warrant in Swan River. 

On Sept. 7, 2024, at approximately 6:35 p.m., Swan River RCMP along with the assistance of the RCMP Emergency Response Team, the RCMP Remote Piloted Aircraft Section, and RCMP Police Service Dog Flex and his handler, executed a search warrant at a residence on 1st Street South in Swan River.

Grande Prairie RCMP investigate the fraudulent sale of a stolen vehicle

Grande Prairie RCMP are asking for the public’s assistance in locating the individual who is now in possession of a black, 1997 BMW Z3 that was purchased during the month of August 2024 in the Grande Prairie area. 

The vehicle was advertised through a social media sales platform. Following an investigation into a report of a stolen vehicle, RCMP believe that the individual who purchased this vehicle is unknowingly the victim of fraud. 

Life-threatening injuries sustained in collision near Ste. Anne Tuesday evening

The RCMP have provided additional information regarding the serious collision near Ste. Anne at the intersection of Highway 12 and PR 210 early Tuesday evening. 

Steinbach RCMP officers were called to the two-vehicle collision at 5:18 PM.  

Police say the initial investigation shows that a semi was travelling northbound on Highway 12 and an SUV was attempting to cross the highway at the intersection when the two vehicles collided. 

Ponteix thrashed with hail, more severe weather coming for southwest

Parts of southwestern Saskatchewan have experienced some wild severe weather from the ongoing storm to this point with more on tap.

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a tornado warning last night for a small section of the southwest that included Neville, Pambrun, and Vanguard.

"Our radar was indicating a very severe thunderstorm in the area that could produce a tornado," said Christy Climenhaga, a scientist with Environment and Climate Change Canada. "Not seeing any reports of funnels or touchdowns."

Dutch filmmakers visit Strathmore to chat with immigrants for upcoming series

Strathmore & Area Adult Inclusive Learning (SAIL) had some surprise guests at their recent class.

A group of filmmakers from the Netherlands were visiting Crowther Memorial Junior High School as they were gathering footage for an upcoming documentary series based on immigration.

"There are a lot of Dutch people who went abroad to a far better life in another country or continent," said director Paul Ruigrok. "We are making a series about those people who went out of the country between 1890 and 1930, about a hundred years ago."

Open house for intermunicipal development planned for this October

The City of Grande Prairie and County of Grande Prairie invite community members to a public open house on October 7, 2024, to review the final version of the draft Intermunicipal Development Plan (IDP).

The IDP is a long-term, strategic plan required by the Municipal Government Act that outlines a vision for development and infrastructure near municipal boundaries.  

Afternoon storm brings heavy rainfall, toonie sized hail

Storm systems hitting Weyburn yesterday and overnight brought significant precipitation and up to toonie sized hail.  

Meteorologist for Environment Canada, Stephen Berg, says the Weyburn received five to upwards of 20 millimetres of rain in the past 24 hours. There were also reports of hail, its size and severity varying across the city.  

Mayor says school site ready to go, more to follow

Mayor Jeff Genung is hopeful the province's school construction accelerator program means we'll be getting more schools sooner.

"I've long said Cochrane has been the recipient of a lot of new residents and it's putting extreme pressures on all of our schools and frankly on all of our infrastructure," says Genung. "It was great to see the UCP government step forward and announce a plan to get more schools built in the province."

Among the eight new school sites identified by the Cochrane, there's one in Heartland that is shovel ready.
