Disc Golf comes to Brandon: Grand Opening event welcomes all ages

The Brandon Disc Golf Club is ramping up for the Grand Opening celebration of Brandon's first disc golf course at Canada Games Park on Hilton Avenue this coming weekend.

The Saturday event will feature a free BBQ lunch & games with speeches from 12 to 2:00 pm as well as opportunities to try disc golf with guidance from members of the Brandon Disc Golf Club (BDGC).

Bears are in ‘hyperphagia’: what hikers need to know

 

Banff National Park is warning hikers that bears are entering a late-season feeding push and urges extra caution on area trails.

Officials said bears are in “hyperphagia,” a period in late summer and fall when they dramatically increase food intake to build fat reserves before hibernation. During this time, they feed almost constantly, focusing on high-calorie foods such as berries, the park said in a Facebook post.

'Show will still go on': Legendary Alberta stuntman, animal wrangler to receive award

Legendary Alberta stuntman and animal wrangler John Scott says he was always better at faking stunts on a horse for the big screen than doing the real ones at rodeos.

His skills made it to Hollywood movie sets and later helped him teach actors Brad Pitt and Jackie Chan the ways of the saddle on his ranch near Longview in southern Alberta.

"(Chan) had never been on a horse, but after 15 days he looked like he had been on a horse forever," Scott said of Chan in the 2000 film "Shanghai Noon."

Weatherlogics calls for warm fall, but then cold and snowy winter

A meteorologist says this week's weather should be a sign of things to come for the rest of September. And September's weather should be a sign of things to come for fall in Southern Manitoba. 

Scott Kehler with Weatherlogics says after a week of cooler weather, we should see a return to above-normal temperatures.

Kehler says this change in weather is a result of a reversal in the jet stream.

Thanks, gratitude and joy after successful N49 Cruise for Hope

Echoes of classic muscle cars and today’s performance exotics can still be heard today after a very successful N49 Cruise for Hope which happened Saturday. This was the second time Pembina Counselling Centre (PCC) held the fundraiser, with 2024 the inaugural event. Altona's Millennium Exhibition Centre (MEC) was the starting point for the 95 vehicles registered, with the day ending at Morden’s Stardust Drive In with a stop along the way at Winkler's Hometown Ford for a car show.

Roseau Valley School expands free meal program

Roseau Valley School (RVS) in Dominion City is now offering free lunch to every student, five days a week. 

The school, part of the Borderland School Division, is off to a strong start this year. 

“We've got so many new and familiar faces coming into the school. We have a very busy school, it's a K to 12, so it's been busy, but a lot of fun,” says Principal Jennifer Collette. 

Expert offers tips to protect children from predators

The President of the Joy Smith Foundation has weighed in on the alleged attempted abductions in Steinbach and area. 

Several reports were made on social media earlier this summer. One of the posts came from an alleged incident that took place at the Steinbach soccer park. It was reported that two men walked over to where children were practicing, stood beside the goal posts, and then watched and filmed the boys playing.

Youth Hub in Portage gears up for fall programs

As summer wraps up, staff at the Portage Youth Hub are shifting programming to meet the schedules of students back in school.

Peer coach Randy Lilley says the hub is marking its first anniversary this fall and continues to adapt to what young people need. He explains that staff spend time talking with youth about what worked in the summer, what to keep going, and how to add more support as the new season begins.
