Fort la Reine School hosts family craft night

Families at Fort la Reine School in Portage la Prairie gathered for a fun-filled family craft night this past week, creating special back-to-school mementos together.

The event saw students and their parents building unique picture frames designed to look like the back of a school bus.

Using popsicle sticks, paint, and glue, each family constructed a frame and then placed a photo of the student in the window.

Raela Giesbrecht, the school social worker and community schools program facilitator at Fort la Reine, says the night was a success.

Ottawa discussing future of emissions cap with Alberta, oil companies: minister

The federal government is in discussions with Alberta and the oil industry about the future of the sector's emissions cap, Energy Minister Tim Hodgson said Friday.

At a news conference in Winnipeg, Hodgson didn't say if Ottawa plans to scrap the emissions cap, but said Alberta and industry agree with the federal government that there needs to be a "fundamental change in the emissions intensity of the oilsands."

Tornado warning issued for parts of southwestern Manitoba

Environment Canada has issued multiple tornado warnings and severe thunderstorm advisories across southern Manitoba Sunday evening as a powerful storm system tracks through the region.

Meteorologists say some of the thunderstorms are capable of producing tornadoes, along with damaging winds, large hail and intense rainfall.

Warnings have shifted through several communities over the evening, including Brenda-Waskada, Grassland and Victoria, with advisories continuing to change as the storm moves east and north.

Over half of Saskatchewan nurses considering leaving profession

A new survey of Saskatchewan nurses paints a troubling picture of the province’s health system, with more than half of respondents saying they are considering leaving the profession altogether.

Published Friday, the survey found that 53.4 per cent of nurses are weighing an exit from healthcare in the province, while 96 per cent reported that short staffing has contributed to longer patient wait times. Nearly 80 per cent said staffing shortages have negatively affected patients’ health.

Unifor welcomes federal measures for workers but calls for stronger action

Federal measures aimed at supporting Canadian workers and industries affected by U.S. tariffs and trade disruptions are a step forward, but more comprehensive action is needed, says Unifor, Canada’s largest private-sector union.

Unifor praised the government’s adjustments to Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) mandate, including the removal of the 20 per cent sales requirement for 2026, calling it necessary temporary relief for the domestic auto industry.

Saskatoon RCMP investigating fatal Highway 219 collision

Saskatoon RCMP say they are investigating a fatal collision south of Saskatoon.

Police responded to a report of a crash on Highway 219, about 15 kilometres south of Saskatoon, at approximately 7:15 a.m. Friday. Two minivans were involved in the collision.

Emergency responders declared the driver of one vehicle, a 48-year-old woman from southeast Saskatchewan, deceased at the scene. Her family has been notified.

The driver of the other minivan, an adult male, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

Four killed, pilot injured in plane crash near St. Theresa Point First Nation

Four people are dead and a young pilot is in hospital after a plane crash in northern Manitoba.

Island Lake RCMP say they received a report of the crash around 6:45 p.m. on Sept. 13. The aircraft went down about 40 kilometres south of St. Theresa Point First Nation, near Makepeace Lake.

Police said the flight had departed from St. Theresa Point and was headed for Makepeace Lake.
