Southwest Saskatchewan crops ahead of schedule after welcome rainfall

Recent rainfall has helped move crop development in southwest Saskatchewan closer to normal for this time of year, but dry patches and topsoil shortages remain a concern across much of the region — including around Moose Jaw.

“Conditions were variable across the province this week,” said Kim Stonehouse, crops extension specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture. “Some areas received heavy storms, others limited rain, and everything in between — including hail.”

Country music legend Neal McCoy lit up the grandstand at Frontier Days

On Friday night, Neal McCoy delivered a high-energy performance that blended decades of hits with spontaneous charm and a deep appreciation for his Canadian fans.

McCoy, who made the 30-hour trek from Texas to Swift Current by bus, said the journey was smooth and well worth it.

"Anytime you get on a bus and go where you're trying to get to and you don't break down, it's always a good trip," he said with a grin before the show.

Arnolds named Notoriously Good Neighbours for June

The City of Moose Jaw and the Moose Jaw and District Chamber of Commerce have named Beverly and Yogi Arnold as the Notoriously Good Neighbours for June. 

The Arnolds were nominated by Kalie Seidlitz for regularly helping others in the neighbourhood, whether it’s caring for pets or taking out garbage and recycling bins. 

Seidlitz, who said she has no immediate family in Moose Jaw, is especially grateful for the couple’s kindness. 

Chinook’s Edge wraps up school year with key updates

In their last trustee meeting for the school year, the Chinook's Edge School Division Board of Trustees made a number of decisions and wished the graduating class the best of luck last week.

The Chinook’s Edge Board of Trustees wishes to extend its congratulations to the graduating class of 2025. The Board echoed the comments of Superintendent Ryan Sawula, given in his Superintendent’s report at the meeting explained the school division.

13th Avenue NW to close for concrete work this week

Traffic on the stretch of 13th Avenue NW between Grace and Montgomery Street will result in the alternating closure of four intersections and impact transit routes for much of July.

From Wednesday, July 2 to July 8, the Montgomery, Albert, and Carleton Street intersections along 13th Avenue will be closed, with only local, southbound traffic being permitted through the Grace Street intersection.

Alberta strikes deal to off-load remaining batch of controversial children's medicine

Three years after Alberta's government paid $70 million for children's pain and fever medicine, its front-line health provider says it has worked out a deal to off-load what remains of the controversial stockpile.

Alberta Health Services spokeswoman Kristi Bland, in a Friday statement, confirmed the medicine is being donated to the charity group Health Partners International of Canada to distribute to "vulnerable communities worldwide."

"Preliminary shipments of products have started to leave Alberta, and additional shipments will happen in the coming months," she wrote.

Carberry's bleachers are so bad, they might win

The Town of Carberry is in the running to win a new set of bleachers and they’re counting on public support to help get them across the finish line.

Carberry is a finalist in the Ugliest Bleachers Contest, hosted by Sports Systems. The winning community will receive a full set of brand-new bleachers, with second and third place earning credits toward future purchases.

Callie Sudak, manager of joint services for Carberry, says the current bleachers are in bad shape.

Cell service gaps are putting lives at risk during wildfires, says Piney Councillor

As wildfires forced evacuations across parts of Manitoba this spring, officials in the Rural Municipality of Piney say a long-standing problem is putting their residents at even greater risk: the lack of reliable cell phone service. The townsite of Badger was evacuated in May, along with Woodrige, Carrick, St. Labre, and Florze.
