Sikh groups call for Indian consulates to be shut down in Vancouver, Toronto
Representatives of a British Columbia Sikh temple whose president was shot dead last year, as well as the Sikh independence group he was involved in, say their communities won't feel safe until India's consulates in Vancouver and Toronto are shut down.
That's after the Canadian government expelled six Indian diplomats, including the high commissioner, and the RCMP announced on Monday it had evidence of their alleged involvement in crimes including homicide and extortion targeting the so-called Khalistan independence movement.
Minister says Canadian Forces to help stranded Air India passengers in Iqaluit
Canada's emergency preparedness minister says the passengers of an Air India flight that landed in Iqaluit due to a bomb threat remain stuck there, and he has approved a request for the military to help them.
Harjit Sajjan posted on X late Tuesday that the airline "hasn't found a solution" after the plane landed in Nunavut's capital with 211 passengers on board earlier in the day and that they are "stranded."
Strathmore veterans gifted Quilts of Valour
Several local veterans received Quilts of Valour on Saturday (Oct. 12) at the Strathmore Legion.
The nationwide program serves to gift veterans the quilts as a way of thanking them for their service. The initiative was brought to Strathmore with the help of Legion member Kevin Armitage.
"I ended up getting a quilt of valour and I recognized what it does for veteran's spirits," said Armitage. "It helps draw veterans out of their homes and get them out and doing things again."
Rocky View County council elect Reeve and Deputy Reeve
Rocky View County council elected a Reeve and Deputy Reeve during a Tuesday (Oct. 15) organizational meeting.
According to the county, members voted Division 3 councillor Crystal Kissel as Reeve and Division 2 councillor Don Kochan as Deputy Reeve.
It's the third term as Reeve for Kissel and the second term for Kochan.
Strathmore darts team wins gold at local tournament
The Strathmore Tenners, a darts team based out of the local legion, won gold over the weekend.
The team took part in the District 9 senior darts playoffs and put six teams from around the area against each other. The event was held at the Strathmore Legion.
"We had teams from Drumheller, Calgary, and Strathmore," said Jenny Schumann, one of the members of the club. "I joined the legion in 1993 and have been playing darts here since then."
Schumann said it was a rough start to the tournament, as the Tenners lost their first three games in a row.
Wheatland County announces 2024 bursary award winners
The 2024 Wheatland County Agricultural Service Board bursary award winners have been announced.
Rhett Gregory was one of the winners and is enrolled in the Agricultural and Heavy Equipment Mechanics program at Olds College.
The second recipient is Dexter Hale who is at Lethbridge Polytechnic taking a bachelor's degree in Ecosystem Management.
Nolan Parker, the third winner is also enrolled at Old College in the Agricultural Management program.
Alberta government unveils new primary healthcare service model
The Alberta government has introduced a new primary care service for residents in the province.
Minister of Health Adriana LaGrange says Primary Care Alberta is the new provincial health agency that will deliver care. It will officially start up later this fall.
According to the provincial government, there will be a transition from Alberta Health Services to four-sector-based provincial health agencies including primary care, acute care, continuing care, and mental health and addiction.
Strathmore Legion prepares for 2024 Poppy Campaign
The Strathmore Legion was filled with volunteers on Tuesday (Oct. 15) in preparation for the upcoming Poppy Campaign.
The initiative delivers poppy pins and wreaths for local schools and businesses in the area.
"That includes Strathmore, Langdon, Chestermere, Carseland, Indus, and Siksika Nation," said Jenny Schumann, former president of the Legion. "A lot of businesses want to show their support with a poppy tray."
According to Schumann, the number of poppies in each box varies depending on the foot traffic a business or school receives.
CN rail reports record grain movement
September was a record month for CN when it comes to grain movement in Western Canada.
CN's Vice President of Grain David Przednowek is pleased with the numbers considering they are still working out some of the kinks from the Grain Workers Strike at the Port of Vancouver.
Annual inflation falls to 1.6% in September, raises odds of 50-basis-point rate cut
The chances of a half-percentage point interest rate cut by the Bank of Canada became more likely Tuesday after Statistics Canada reported annual inflation fell to 1.6 per cent in September.
Economist Tu Nguyen of accounting and consultancy firm RSM Canada said she had expected the inflation rate to remain close to the central bank's two per cent target, where it was in August, for a few more months.
"This is one of the instances where I'm happy to be wrong," she said.
