FireFit Regional Championship coming to Strathcona County
Strathcona County will be hosting the FireFit Regional Championship this weekend.
The event will go on Saturday (June 3) and is taking place from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the parking lot of the Kinsmen Leisure Centre in Sherwood Park.
"FireFit is kind of like an obstacle course that tests the six essential tasks of a firefighter," said Brad Dicks, a firefighter with Strathcona County Emergency Services.

Strathcona County RCMP locate missing woman
Strathcona RCMP has located a missing woman.
On Thursday (June 1) afternoon, police say that they located 28-year-old Jaime Bridger after she was reported missing the day before.
"The Strathcona County RCMP are pleased to report that Jamie has been located safe," said the RCMP in a release.
"Police would like to thank the public for their assistance in this matter."
Before being found, Bridger was reported to have been last seen in rural Strathcona County on May 1 and then was believed to be sighted at the Hope Mission in Edmonton on May 2.
New BBQ restaurant opens in Fort Saskatchewan
Fort Saskatchewan residents will now be able to enjoy the taste of Texan BBQ.
Dickey's Barbecue Pit has officially opened up in Southpointe, with their grand opening set for today.
"We [didn't] have any unique BBQ restaurant in Fort Saskatchewan so we planned to bring in a world-known BBQ restaurant," said Sajeev Kottackl Joseph, one of the owners of the Fort Sask location.
Joseph was joined by two other partners, Albin Georg and Jinu Jose, in bringing the franchise into the community.
Morinville RCMP investigate robbery
Morinville RCMP is looking for a suspect involved in a robbery.
On Wednesday (May 31) evening, police were dispatched after calls of an armed robbery at the Calahoo convenience store.
According to police, a lone man wearing a mask, gloves, and a hoody entered the store with a handgun, demanding cash and threatening to shoot the employee.
The suspect left the scene with an undisclosed amount of money, and two bottles of dark rum.
The suspect drove away in a white SUV with the rear plates removed. Officers believe the vehicle may be a Kia.
Fort Sask census extended through the weekend
The Fort Saskatchewan municipal census has been extended a few more days.
In a release on Thursday (June 1), the city announced that they would be extending the census until Sunday.
"We're just trying to get everybody accounted for," said Sheryl Exley, a legislative officer with the city. "We're taking those extra days to allow residents, if they hadn't had the opportunity to input their census online, they still have that opportunity until June 4 at midnight."
Fort Saskatchewan celebrating seniors next week
The City of Fort Saskatchewan will be celebrating its seniors next week.
On Thursday (June 1) Mayor Gale Katchur proclaimed that June 5 to 11 will be known as Seniors' Week in the city.
"Seniors play an integral role in our community, serving as mentors, volunteers, and leaders," said Katchur. "Their stories and life experiences shape the fabric of our society, leaving an indelible mark on the lives they touch."
"By celebrating Seniors' Week, we hope to highlight the importance of their presence and the positive influence they have on our lives.”
Everything you need to know about the Sheep Returning Parade
One of Fort Saskatchewan's premier events will be taking place this weekend.
On Saturday (June 3), the city's iconic grazing sheep will be returning as part of the Family Festival.
To mark this, the city plans on hosting their annual Sheep Returning Parade which will run alongside the river before climbing up the valley and into Peter T. Ream Park.
The parade will get going at noon and will run for about a half hour.
City of Fort Saskatchewan makes decision on fire ban
Fort Saskatchewan has officially lifted its fire ban and implemented a fire restriction.
With the new restriction, here is what you can now use:
- Enclosed fire pits
- Charcoal Barbecues
- Heaters
- Pellet Smokers
- Fires in designated areas installed by the City of Fort Saskatchewan
- Solid fuel appliances
- Smudge fires
Burn permits and open burning are still restricted.
This comes after Sturgeon County and Strathcona County have announced similar restrictions.
Local police arrest man for alleged armed robbery
Strathcona County RCMP has laid charges on an Edmonton man for an alleged armed robbery.
In early March, police got reports of a robbery. The victim claims to have been walking in a residential neighbourhood when a male suspect appeared, pointed a firearm, and robbed them.
The male suspect fled the scene in a vehicle. Although police contained the area, the suspect and the vehicle were not located.
Investigators from the Strathcona County Persons Crime Unit were assigned the investigation, where they quickly identified a suspect and brought them into custody.
RCMP arrest man after series of Strathcona County break-ins
A man has been arrested after a series of alleged vehicle break-ins in Sherwood Park and St. Albert.
Strathcona County RCMP received several reports of vehicle break-ins in the Summerwood neighbourhood.
Early into the investigation, a suspect was identified that matched the description of a suspect responsible for other vehicle break-ins in St. Albert.
On May 25, police executed a search warrant in Edmonton where the suspect was taken into custody. Police found a large amount of stolen property worth a total of $15,000.
