Weyburn Surge storms into finals, finishes second in province
The Sask Volleyball Provincial tournament was held through the weekend bringing teams from across the province.
From the Weyburn Volleyball Club, Weyburn Surge delivered an impressive performance throughout the tournament, finishing second in the Division 2 Championship and bringing home the silver medal.
Competing in Pool C, Weyburn Surge saw a strong start on Saturday claiming three straight set victories against the Eclipse Elite, Momentum Black, and Route 20 Renegades.
Cochrane High grad makes history with U.S. volleyball team
A Cochrane High graduate has just wrapped up a stellar volleyball season at an Illinois university.
In his third season with the Aurora University (AU) Spartans men’s volleyball team, Josh McLellan earned numerous honours and set new team records.
The six-foot-eight outside hitter was named the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) Player of the Year and selected as a First-Team AVCA All-American — the first in AU program history.
Rebels acquire forward from Thunderbirds
Red Deer Rebels owner, president and general manager Brent Sutter announced that the club has completed a trade with the Seattle Thunderbirds.
The Rebels have acquired forward Zane Torre from the Thunderbirds in exchange for a fourth-round pick at the 2025 WHL Prospects Draft (via Everett) and a conditional fourth-round pick at the 2028 WHL Prospects Draft.
Esso Awards end minor hockey season in Kindersley
Another season of Kindersley Minor Hockey is complete after last week's annual Esso Awards. Players from U7 to U18 joined players from the youth recreational program for the two-part awards night, U7, U9, and Rec starting the night, U11, U13, U15, and U18 players having their awards held after.
Awards for U7 and Rec included Most Team Spirited, Most Improved, and Most Dedicated. U9-U18 gave out those awards in addition to team MVP's, the U15 award named after Trent Kresse and the U18 award after Darren Uzelman, two past Kindersley hockey legends who are no longer with us.
RUSH REACH - Rush gear up for playoff showdown vs Swarm
The regular season is in the books, and the Saskatchewan Rush are off to the playoffs!
The Rush will face the Georgia Swarm in the single-elimination quarterfinal game on Saturday, April 26. Rush broadcaster Cody Janzen is looking forward to an exciting matchup.
“I would expect a goaltender’s duel,” Janzen said. “It’s two of the best goalies in the game with Frank Scigliano and Brett Dobson going head-to-head.”
Jury selection begins in case involving Cochrane’s Dillon Dubé
Jury selection is underway in the high-profile trial of five former Canadian world junior hockey players, including Cochrane native Dillon Dubé.
Dubé, who rose through local hockey ranks before being drafted by the Calgary Flames in 2016, is facing one count of sexual assault in connection with an alleged incident in 2018.
The trial is taking place in London, Ontario, with proceedings expected to last several weeks. Dubé appeared at pretrial hearings in November alongside fellow accused Michael McLeod, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart, and Cal Foote.
Reschny’s playoff tear continues as Royals fight to stay alive
The Western Hockey League's Victoria Royals, featuring Macklin native Cole Reschny — who is currently tied for first among scorers in the WHL playoffs — are on the brink of elimination tonight on the road against the Spokane Chiefs.
Reschny has a share of the league lead with 25 points in 10 games this postseason. Nine goals have him fourth in that category for the playoffs, Reschny's 16 assists enough to be tied for third with WHL phenom, and Medicine Hat forward Gavin McKenna.
Foothills Special Olympics Bowling team takes home huge trophy
The Foothills Special Olympics Bowling team picked up a huge trophy recently at a bowling tournament.
Local athlete Angie Brown said their extra-large team had a lot of fun, too.
"We went to Olds for the tournament; it was actually a smaller tournament, so that's why we were able to take ten bowlers. All ten of us got first-place ribbons, and then we got surprised with the big, I call it the honker trophy, so we all got surprised with that at the supper and dance. It's half the size of me!"
Jury selection begins in sexual assault case involving former Airdrie player, four others
Jury selection is now underway in the trial of five former Canadian world junior hockey players, including former U15 AAA Airdrie Xtreme player Dillon Dubé, accused in a 2018 sexual assault case.
The proceedings are taking place in London, Ont, where Dubé appeared in pretrial hearings last November alongside co-accused Michael McLeod, Alex Formenton, Carter Hart, and Cal Foote.
Each of the accused faces one count of sexual assault, with McLeod facing an additional charge. A publication ban remains in place, restricting details about the complainant and witnesses.
Strathmore teaching residents the basics of pickleball
The Town of Strathmore is hosting an event to help residents get into pickleball.
The event takes place at the Strathmore Motor Products Sports Centre on April 23 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and features instructor Sheila McLeod.
"We do have racquets. Just wear indoor athletic shoes, have water, and be ready to move," wrote the town on its website.
Although tickets for the event cost $20, those with a monthly or annual membership at the Sports Centre can register for free.
The event is for adults 18 and over.
