Sports Round-Up: Tuesday, July 15
All three Western Canadian Baseball League games scheduled for last night were postponed due to rain. There are four games are on the slate tonight including the Moose Jaw Miller Express at home to the Weyburn Beavers. First pitch is 7:05 p.m. at Ross Wells Park.
Major League Baseball's All-Star Game is on tonight in Atlanta. Blue Jay's Vladimir Guererro Junior will start at first base for the American League while his Toronto teammate Alejandro Kirk is also suiting up. The game gets underway at 6 p.m. at Truist Park.
Ross and Woods win Elmwood Cup
A double win for Ayden Ross and Ryder Woods at the Elmwood Cup over the weekend.
The won the championship flight and championship horse race.
Shane Moore and Doug Hildebrandt won the second flight, while Kerry and Brittany Ford won the third flight.
Alberta crushes Manitoba 52-7 in Canada Cup opener
Team Alberta exploded out of the gate at the U18 Football Canada Cup, racking up 51 points in the first half on their way to a dominant 52-7 win over Manitoba in Sunday’s tournament opener.
Alberta’s defence set the tone early, shutting down Manitoba’s opening drive and forcing a safety for the game’s first points. Quarterback Harrison Hyndman followed up with a perfectly executed shovel pass to running back Joel Thorpe for the tournament’s first touchdown.
Crowds Flock to Wood Mountain Stampede
The crowds were cheering at the 136th annual Wood Mountain Stampede, Canada's longest continuously running rodeo, held just south of Wood Mountain in the regional park.
Rhett Fitzpatrick, a past competitor and current board member of the Wood Mountain Stampede, shared his excitement about this year's event.
"It's a full weekend of rodeoing," he said.
We've got every major event, bareback, saddle bronc, and bull riding, plus amateur bronc and bareback riding.

Wirth, 5 local track stars heading to Edmonton
Local coach Al Wirth along with 5 track stars from the Morden/Winkler areas are gearing up to head to Edmonton as part of the Western Canada Track Challenge this upcoming weekend.
Kleefeld's Chartrand part of Manitoba U18 Indigenous gold medal winning team
Javien Chartrand of Kleefeld was on the Manitoba U18 Indigenous team that claimed gold at the national championships, and the 16-year-old opened a lot of eyes with his play.
"I was nervous at first," Chartrand says about his feelings leading up to the big game in Winnipeg. "But, I was fine throughout the game."
There was a lot of great talent on the field, and Chartrand believes he was right there with all of them. "When the nerves left my body, I was fine. I just balled out."
Penner's dominating season continues, tied for 1st at Men's Amateur
It's been a sensational summer for golf star Doug Penner, and after coming off winning the Steinbach Fly-In Championship recently, he's carried that strong play to the Men's Amateur in Winnipeg where he is tied for 1st after day one.
"Today was great," Penner says from his home in Mitchell. "Weather was perfect for golf, it wasn't very windy and 22 degrees. I was hitting the ball solid and making putts, it was a fun day."
Morgan Barron signs extension with the Winnipeg Jets
The Winnipeg Jets announced on Monday that they have agreed to terms with forward Morgan Barron.
In 74 games with the Jets last season, the 26-year-old recorded 15 points and 16 penalty minutes. The Halifax, N.S. native also notched two assists and two penalty minutes in the 2025 playoffs.
Barron was originally picked 174th overall by the New York Rangers in the 2017 NHL Draft. He has played in 256 NHL games through his career between the Rangers and Jets with 60 points and 80 penalty minutes.
The two-year extension has an average annual value of $1,850,000.
Miller Express split weekend road games
The Moose Jaw Miller Express picked up a split over the weekend, defeating the Medicine Hat Mavericks 6–4 on Saturday before falling to the Regina Red Sox 9–7 on Sunday afternoon.
On Saturday, the Miller Express earned a road win over the Mavericks.
