Junior Strathmore Venom prepare for final games of the season

The end of the regular season is right around the corner for the junior Strathmore Venom lacrosse team.

The Venom began practice in April, having their first season game towards the end of the month.

As the season comes to a close, the junior Venom have two games left before they take a break for the summer.

On Saturday (July 12), the Venom will be playing the Cochrane Rage at the Cochrane Aquatic Centre Spray Lakes Centre.

After that, the Venom will have their home finisher on Sunday in a game against the Stingers.

Both games begin at 2 p.m.

The Weyburn Beavers Baseball Club asked fans to pack the park at last night's game against the Saskatoon Berries, and Weyburn answered.  

The excitement stemmed from a special guest joining the stands, Sportsnet Central baseball analyst Jamie Campbell took a hiatus from the Toronto Blue Jays to take in some summer college ball action.  

Okotoks Dawgs lose tough one in a walk off single in Fort Mac

It was a reversal of fortunes on Thursday night for the Okotoks Dawgs.

The WCBL West Division leading team lost 7-6 to the Giants in Fort McMurray in a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th inning.

The Dawgs are in Fort McMurray for a 4-game series over the weekend.

The Dawgs lead the West Division by a game and a half over the Lethbridge Bulls and the Sylvan Lake Gulls.

Coming up next week, the Okotoks Dawgs invite the Saskatoon Berries to Seaman Stadium for a pair of games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

5 Albertans in Saddle Bronc kicked off Pool C in top form yesterday at the Calgary Stampede

The Calgary Stampede had Albertans rooting for five of the 10 Saddle Bronc riders as Pool C kicked off Thursday.

The Hay brothers from Wildwood, AB, are always top contenders, having both won the Calgary Stampede before.

Dawson Hay took the top score of 91.50 as brother Logan finished in 3rd with a score of 88.00.

Ben Anderson (Rocky Mountain House, AB) scored an 84.00 on a re-ride as Quinten Taylor (Nanton, AB) scored an 83.50 and Millarville's Layton Green came in 10th with a score of 80.50.

High River's Jason Glass had the fastest time of the night at the Rangeland Derby

Thursday night was a good one for High River's Jason Glass.

The defending Rangeland Derby champion at the Calgary Stampede had a penalty-free heat and finished with the top time of the night.

Glass' checkered wagon was the only one to crack the 1:13 mark with a time of 1:12.15.

The first-place finish moves him into the coveted 3rd place in the aggregate.

Only the top 3 in the aggregate after Saturday night's races will go to the final heat on Championship Sunday.

There are no semi-final heats this year.

Sports Round-Up: Friday, July 11

They blew a 4-4 game wide-open with 8 runs in the 7th and the Moose Jaw Miller Express came away with a 19-5 win over the Mavericks in Medicine Hat last night. The Millers pounded the Mavericks pitchers for 23 hits including two home runs - one from Austin Gurney and another from Tanner DeGrazia. The Millers have tonight off. They'll play in Medicine Hat again tomorrow night.

Toronto Blue Jays had Thursday off. They'll play the Athletics in Sacramento tonight.

WATCH: Buttar top of Pool C after first ride at Calgary Stampede

A vintage ride from Eatonia's Dakota Buttar at the Calgary Stampede on Thursday vaulted him into first place in Pool C of the bull riding competition with two rides still left to go.

Going eight seconds on OLS Tubs Big River, Buttar scored an 85.50 to just edge second place finisher Luke Mackey's score of 85.00. The first-place performance also came with a nice $7,750 payout.
