Sports Update - Thursday, September 12th

The Winnipeg Goldeyes and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks are going the distance in their American Association West Division Championship Series. The RedHawks rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Fish Wednesday night in Winnipeg. Fargo-Moorhead scored the tying and go ahead runs in the top of the eighth inning and added an insurance run in the ninth. Max Murphy drove in a pair of runs for the Goldeyes. The deciding third game goes tonight (6:30 p.m.) at Blue Cross Park. The winner will meet the Kane County Cougars in the Wolff Cup final.

High River Flyers GM and coach accepts new role with Olds Grizzly's

The High River Flyers with the HJHL have announced that former GM and head coach Colten Hayes has accepted a new role as being the assistant coach for the Olds Grizzlys of the AJHL.

Hayes spent three seasons with the Flyers dating back to the 2018-2019 season when he first was introduced to the coaching staff. He would then earn the GM title in the 2019-2020 season before coaching the Okotoks Oilers U18 AA and the Foothills Bisons U18 AA teams in the next two seasons. 

Goldeyes lose to RedHawks leading to game three of the West Division Playoffs

The Winnipeg Goldeyes will return to the field at Blue Cross Park tonight for game three of the West Division Playoffs after losing 5-3 to the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Wednesday evening.  

The winning team will move on to the American Association Final, where they will take on the Kane County Cougars, who took the East Division series against the Chicago Dogs. 

Viragos adjust tactics following tough game, preparing for Moosomin Generals

The U18 Viragos faced a challenging game this past weekend, ending in a significant 62-13 loss. Despite the defeat, there were some positives to take away.

“The young players showed some jitters when the game first started, but they got a feel for what a game is actually like. Now they know more preparation is needed and practices are an important part of the game,” said coach Mark Tribiger.

Kara Kondrat playing pro hockey in Sweden

Cochrane's Kara Kondrat is heading to Sweden to play in a professional women's hockey league.

The 24-year has opted to go pro after finishing her storied 6-year university career with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

"I wasn't really ready to give it up and I wanted to experience something new," says Kondrat, "And the appeal of travelling was something exciting for me."

She'll be lacing up for Uppsala and heads to Sweden next week.

Scherr named Terriers' captain for 2024

The Portage Terriers are continuing a recent trend of having their captain be a returning defenceman, with the team announcing that Parker Scherr will be named the captain for this season.

Scherr was acquired from the Olds Grizzlys on September 22, 2022, for Future Considerations, which has worked out tremendously for the Dogs, as Scherr quickly established himself as a threat at both ends of the ice. 

Head Coach and GM of Portage, Blake Spiller commented in a press release from the Terriers that the decision was not very difficult.

Weyburn senior golfers finish season with $1500 toward irrigation project

The Weyburn Senior Men's Golf wrapped up their 2024 season yesterday. Throughout the season the group participated in a 50/50 on Tuesdays and Thursdays to raise money to pay ff the Front Irrigation Project debt. $1500 was raised this year bringing the total amount contributed by the group to $6200 in the last four years.  

The cheque was presented to Manager Chad Brock by Executive Stan Runne, Don MacKinnon, and George Mcleod and 50/50 chairperson Murray Benson. 

'This isn't the end of my journey': Chris Streveler has 3 torn ligaments

Chris Streveler announced that his 2024 season is over after suffering a major knee injury during last weekend's Banjo Bowl.

In an emotional Instagram post, Streveler revealed that he tore three of the four major ligaments in his knee, marking the first time in his career that he's stayed down on the field following an injury.

“I’ve been through a lot of adversity in this game, but through it all I’m reminded that you can only truly control three things—how you show up on a daily basis, how hard you work, and what type of attitude you have,” Streveler wrote.

Bulldogs drop pre-season opener

The Blackfalds Bulldogs opened up their 2024/25 BCHL campaign with a pre-season loss.

The Bulldogs fell 5-2 at home Tuesday night to the Okotoks Oilers.

Blackfalds found themselves down 3-0 early in the second before Porter Byrd-Leitner got the Bulldogs on the board at 2:52 to cut the lead to 3-1.

Ben Rakowski would cut the lead to 3-2 at the 8:33 mark of the second.

That would be all the scoring for the Bulldogs as Okotoks would add two more in the third including an empty netter.

Deanna Talbot prepares for fall Special Olympics program in Portage: new season, new opportunities

Portage is gearing up for an exciting new season of the Special Olympics program, set to begin this fall. The program will resume its activities starting Monday, September 23, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the École Arthur Meighen gym.

Deanna Talbot, the head coach of the Portage Special Olympics program, is excited about the upcoming season. 

"We're looking for athletes of all ages, so any children or adults who want to get involved in the program, regardless of their abilities, are welcome."
