Canada grinds out win over Czechia to stay on top of the standings

Czechia took down two giants in Team China and Team Scotland, but they couldn't take down the third giant in Canada during Wednesday evening's draw at the BKT World Men's Curling Championship at Temple Gardens Centre.

Canada stole a total of eight points throughout the game to grind out an 8-3 win. It wasn't their best performance, only curling 86 per cent as a team.

Third Marc Kennedy talked about the mental toughness needed to win a game like that, as well as getting through the week.

Chinese loss puts Canada alone in first place

Team China took a 10-3 loss to Czechia during the Wednesday afternoon draw at the BKT World Men’s Curling Championship at Temple Gardens Centre.

China drops their record to 6-2, while Canada sits atop the standings at 6-1.

Despite having three losses, Czechia has been giant slayers at this championship as they have picked up wins now against China and Scotland. They have a chance to take down another giant when they meet Canada tonight in the evening draw at 7 pm.

Rhett Dekowny commits to MacEwan

Swift Current's Rhett Dekowny will continue his hockey career in U Sports.

He will suit up for MacEwan University in the 2025-26 hockey season.

Dekowny spent the last three seasons with Canmroe in the AJHL. 

He had 116 points over 168 games with the Eagles.

That includes 59 points in 52 games this season. 

Dekowny was also nominated for the AJHL Most Dedicated Player Award and named February's AJHL Player of the Month.

Just how quickly interest in hockey has been rejuvenated in Mînî Thnî was illustrated during a hockey camp that attracted more than 220 youth last week.

Now, at least nine Mînî Thnî hockey teams are lacing up for their first games in the 30th Alberta Native Hockey Provincials, which begin today in Edmonton.

The hockey camp, led by Steve Parsons of Edgeboss Hockey, was presented by the Chiniki Group of Companies along with the Chiniki and Goodstoney First Nations and several sponsors.

Hockey player with Strathmore roots lighting up the net in KIJHL

Nash Wassing is lighting up the back of the net.

Wassing, originally from Strathmore, plays with the Grand Forks Border Bruins of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League (KIJHL).

"It's where I first learned to play. It's where I made all those first connections with all my friends playing hockey," he said of his time in Strathmore.

He was recently named one of the league's three stars of the week.

"I've got good linemates, got good teammates, and they're just helping me out and I've been able to put the puck in the net," Wassing said.

Sundog commits to Fanshawe College

A standout Swift Current volleyball player is off to southern Ontario to continue her career at the post-secondary level.

Swift Current Sundog Simone Pinsonneault recently committed to Fanshawe College in London, Ontario.

Pinsonneault has made a name for herself as a talented volleyball player locally. Her hard work, dedication, and leadership on the court helped earn her the opportunity at the next level.

Pinsonneault's journey from Gravelbourg to a post-secondary athletic career is a testament to the power of perseverance, passion, and community support. 

April 2nd in Swift Current Broncos history

If you're a Swift Current Broncos fan looking for a good omen before tonight's playoff game against Medicine Hat, April 2nd has been a good day in recent Broncos history.

Since 2000, the Broncos have played five playoff games on April 2nd and won all five.

That includes three series-clinching games.

Their most recent April 2nd game was last season's 5-3 win in Game 3 of their first round series against Lethbridge.

Weyburn Curling Club delivers memorable Provincial Curling Championship

This past weekend, the Weyburn Curling Club hosted the 2025 Provincial Seniors Men's and Women's Curling Championship. Chair Chris Mass says it was a successful event. 

“It exceeded my expectations, actually. Weyburn, give yourselves a pat on the back. We had lots of people come to watch. The stands were packed with people. Thank you very much for showing up.” 

The championship saw two athletes move on to the national championships, men's winner Bruce Korte with the Nutana Curling Club and women's winner Amber Holland with the Sutherland Curling Club.  

Strathmore Venom Lacrosse Club moves practices back to town

The Strathmore Venom Lacrosse Club has moved its practices back to town.

The team has been running a winter camp in Calgary since the start of the year. After crews cleared the ice from the Strathmore Family Centre's Blue Arena, the Venom returned home.

"It's really nice because we have a draw zone all the way out to Siksika, Standard, Hussar, Rockyford, so it's a bit of a jaunt in," said head coach Travis Gauthier. 

With the regular season beginning on Apr. 14, the team will be training hard in anticipation of its first game.
