57's hire Estrella as new bench boss
The Swift Current 57's have a new head coach.
The WCBL club turned over the reins to former assistant coach Ruddy Estrella.
“I’m excited to have the opportunity to be the head coach for the Swift Current 57’s," Estrella said in a team media release. "The team has a history of winning behind it, and I am up for the challenge to bring that back. I have family that ties me to the city and the community, so it means a lot to me to be coming back."
Estralla joined the 57's last season as a member of Jayson Veyna's staff.
Ardens win provincial bronze
The Swift Current Comp. Ardens are bringing home the bronze.
The Ardens topped Yorkton Regional 4-1 in today's bronze medal game at the 5A high school soccer provincials.
It was some redemption for Ardens after Yorkton beat them to claim gold at regionals.
Swift Current started provincials with a dramatic 2-1 overtime win over St. Mary on Friday.
They then fell 3-0 to Holy Cross in the provincial semi-final before wrapping up their season with the win over Yorkton.
La Verendrye pass, sets, and crushes the competition in annual tournament
The annual Pass, Set, Crush Volleyball Tournament held at La Verendrye School (LVS) recently concluded with an exciting victory for the boy's team from LVS. This year's event saw both boy's and girl's teams competing fiercely, with the boys unexpectedly clinching the championship title.
Mitch Nelissen, one of the coaches, and LVS Phys'Ed teacher expressed surprise at the boys' triumph.
"We weren’t expecting to win, but the team came together and played exceptionally well."
PCI Trojans face heartbreaking playoff loss and reflect on season
The Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI) Trojans football team faced a heartbreaking playoff loss against the Fort Frances Muskies on Thursday, October 24, ending their playoffs earlier than they hoped. Head Coach Brendon Brydges shared his thoughts on the game and the journey the team undertook this year.
"It was tough, especially since we had nine Grade 12 players, some of whom have been with the team since my first-year coaching."
Brydges emphasized the hard work and commitment demonstrated by the team throughout the season.
Deja vu all over again; Rebels beat Tigers for fifth time this season
The Red Deer Rebels improved their record to 5-1 against the Medicine Hat Tigers so far this season with a 4-2 win Friday night at Peavey Mart Centrium.
The win improved the Rebels overall record to 7-4-1-0, placing them in top spot in the Central Division with 15 points. Medicine Hat falls to 6-6 and sits in third spot in the Central with 12 points.
Jhett Larson opened up the scoring for the Rebels 57 seconds into the first with his third goal of the season.
Broncos knock off Hurricanes 4-1
The Swift Current Broncos scored four unanswered goals and found their way to their third straight win in a 4-1 victory over the Lethbridge Hurricanes Friday night.
The Hurricanes would open the scoring at 5:24 into the game as Nashville Predators draft pick Miguel Marques would shelf a shot in the slot to give Lethbridge a 1-0 after 1.
Eatonia’s Dakota Buttar claims third place at PBR Medicine Hat Classic
Dakota Buttar, one of Saskatchewan’s top bull riders, showcased his skills at the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Medicine Hat Classic over the weekend, finishing third overall. Representing Eatonia, Buttar’s focus and determination were key to his success.
“Even with the loud noise and music and everything going on, all I can really hear is myself and the bull,” Buttar said, emphasizing the intense concentration required in the sport. “Everybody takes things differently, but I’m a pretty focused person.”
Ippon athlete claims world championship for Canada
Ella Nishida has become the first world champion of the Ippon Karate Dojo.
Representing Canada in Rhodes, Greece, she has claimed double gold at the WKU World Championships. Kian Quiambao, also of Ippon, won a silver and bronze medal.
"This is our first world champion under a world league," says Adam Wackershauer, chief instructor of the Cochrane karate dojo. "We've had Pan-American world medallist before for the WKF (World Karate Federation) but we've never had a world champion in the dojo yet.
Lakovic ready for pressure-packed draft season ahead
Moose Jaw, Sask. – Lynden Lakovic’s stock is on the rise heading into the 2025 NHL Draft.
This week, the Moose Jaw Warriors forward was given an ‘A’ rating by NHL Central Scouting in their Preliminary Players to Watch list, and he was also named to Team CHL for the 2024 CHL USA Prospects Challenge presented by Kubota next month.
Lakovic said the outside accolades hasn’t phased him as he looks to continue climbing up the draft rankings.
Terriers plan to slow down the cold against Winnipeg Freeze
A back-to-back often provides teams with an opportunity to demonstrate who they really are. Tonight will be no different, despite coming in against the team suspected to be the weakest in the MJHL.
The Winnipeg Freeze have a single win against the Terriers so far in their 185-game history, an overtime victory against the Dogs at the Hockey For All Centre. The Terriers led the game with a minute to play, but a goal with the Freeze net empty tied things up, and Elliot Perreault scored 44 seconds into the extra frame to spoil the dogs perfect record against them.
