Fines, Hooper help lead Canadian charge at U20 Worlds

Cochrane Cowboy Wrestling Club alumni Annika Fines and Nick Hooper were among Canada’s top performers at the 2025 U20 World Wrestling Championships in Samokov, Bulgaria, Aug. 17-21.

Fines was Canada’s second-highest-placing female wrestler, finishing eighth in the women’s 62-kilogram freestyle category. Hooper was the second-best Canadian on the men’s side, placing 12th in the 74-kilogram division.

Team Saskatchewan wins bronze at Men's National Baseball Championships

The National Men’s Baseball Championships wrapped up on Sunday in Regina. 

In the bronze medal game, members of the Marysburg Royals were in both dugouts as Team Saskatchewan battled the host, Regina Trappers.  

Team Saskatchewan won the bronze medal game 13-3.  

Marysburg’s Tom Hooker was the leadoff hitter for Team Saskatchewan, and had two hits, scored a pair of runs and also stole two bases.  

Saskatchewan Roughriders lead in the west shrinks to two points following 32-15 loss to Calgary

 

Through the first half of the 2025 Canadian Football League (CFL) regular season has a record 8-0 against six of their eight CFL opponents. 

The one team that has had the Roughriders number this year is the Calgary Stampeders.  

On Saturday, the Stampeders completed a two-game sweep over the Roughriders after a 32-15 victory at McMahon Stadium.  

Pair of 19-year-olds face trafficking charges after $17,900 fentanyl seizure

Approximately $17,900 worth of fentanyl, a replica firearm, and other drug-related evidence was seized following a traffic stop on Friday night. 

At 10:38 p.m. on August 22, the Winnipeg Police Service received a call from a concerned citizen about a 2019 Chevrolet Malibu being driven recklessly on Portage Avenue after entering the city from the Perimeter Highway. 

More Cochranites medal at Canada Summer Games

Two more Cochranites who were part of Team Alberta are returning with medals from the Canada Summer Games that wrapped up yesterday in St. John’s, N.L.

Leyton Balint, 18, won a silver medal as a member of Alberta’s women’s volleyball team.

The team faced Ontario in the final after going undefeated in the preliminary round and through two playoff rounds. Alberta dug deep but ultimately fell 3–1 in a hard-fought match.

Wranglers name co-winners of Volunteer of the Year Award

The Sylvan Lake Wranglers have named the first-ever co-winners of their Volunteer of the Year Award.

Tammy Whitney and Brandi Maxon were recognized for their contributions during the team’s championship season.

The Wranglers said in a social media statement the pair "took this season to the next level" by supporting players throughout the playoffs to running what they called the “most happening beer garden in the league.”

“Their tireless efforts not only met the standard — they exceeded it,” the team said.

Local stock car drivers win big at PDRA races

It was a rowdy and rumbling weekend as the Prairie Dirt Racing Association (PDRA) Tour returned to the southwest for a round of races to close off summer in conjunction with the Swift Current Ag & Ex's first-ever Cowboys & Chrome event. 

The Swift Current Stock Car Association hosted the races at the Swift Current Motor Speedway, with a full lineup of cars, including an all-new kids' modified class.
