Sports Update - Sunday, October 13th
The Miller Aces and Morden Thunder captured the Provincial A-AA-AAA High School Soccer championship banners Saturday in Minnedosa. Miller defeated the Garden Valley Zodiacs 3-1 in the girls final while Morden shaded GVC 2-1 in the boys final. Minnesoda/Erickson beat Oscar Lathlin 5-0 in the girls consolation final. The host Chancellors blanked Niverville 1-0 in the boys third place. Minnedosa’s Grady Burton and Zach Lamb were named tournament All-Stars.

The Zone 13 champions played in the third place games at the Provincial A-AA-AAA High School Soccer championships Saturday in Minnedosa. Niverville girls lost 2-1 to the Morden Thunder and Niverville boys fell 1-0 to the host Minnedosa Chancellors. Hannah DeGueldre, Liam Montgomery and Haven Wiebe of the Panthers were named tournament All-Stars. Miller defeated the Garden Valley Zodiacs 3-1 in the girls final while Morden shaded GVC 2-1 in the boys final Saturday in Minnedosa. Midfielder Lindsey Miller of the Aces and midfielder Elliot Haines of the Thunder were named the tournament MVP’s.
Hat tricks power Red Wings to victory over Terriers
Thanks to hat tricks from Ethan Dekay and Jaxson Ruthven, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings extended their winning streak to four games Saturday night. They moved back up to .500 on the season as they defeated the Yorkton Terriers 6-4.
"We've talked about winning season series within our division, and tonight was a big step in the right direction for that," said head coach Cody Mapes after the game. The Terriers had won the first two meetings of the season between the two clubs, with the win Saturday night being the first Wings victory over Yorkton on the season.
Strong second secures Steinbach’s sixth straight
With the help of a four-goal second period, the Steinbach Pistons extended their winning streak to six games after defeating the Niverville Nighthawks 5-1 on Saturday night.
In the opening period, the teams went back and forth, not so much trading chances, but showcasing strong defensive hockey, refusing to let their opponent gain much traction in the zone.
The best chance for Steinbach came on a shortened 5 on 3 power play, but the Nighthawks penalty kill held strong.
PREVIEW | Warriors head to Bridge City to battle Blades
Moose Jaw, Sask. – The Moose Jaw Warriors are heading back out on the road on Saturday night.
The Warriors will travel to SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon to battle the Blades for the first time since Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Championship.
Moose Jaw won that game to finish off an epic series win that saw six of seven games decided in overtime. The Warriors would go on to capture their first Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL Champions.
PCI Trojans show resilience in narrow loss to Fort Frances Muskies
In a challenging game on Wednesday, October 9, The PCI Trojans football team faced a tough defeat by the Fort Frances Muskies 23 – 18. Despite a shaky start, the team displayed a remarkable turnaround, scoring 12 unanswered points after halftime.
Coach Brendon Brydges noted a significant mentality shift at the end of the first half.
“We realized we could compete that second half.”
Bulldogs' comeback falls short in Surrey
The Blackfalds Bulldogs are still looking for their first win of the BCHL season after dropping a 3-2 nailbiter in Surrey, BC Friday night.
The Bulldogs would find themselves down 2-0 early in the third but would battle back with goals from Jamie Darlison and Aidan Castle. Darlison's power play marker was the first of the season for Blackfalds who went into the game 0-for-18 with the man-advantage.
Brandon Gill netted his fourth of the season and second of the game with less than four minutes remaining to put the Eagles in front for good.
Generals dominate in home opener
The Lacombe AA Generals quest for a third straight Vanberg Cup got off to a promising start Friday night in front of about 250 fans at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex, with a dominating 11-1 win over the Westlock Warriors.
It was the Generals' first NCHL game of the season, while Westlock dropped its third in a row to start the season.
Chase Schaber opened the scoring for the home side close to five minutes in and the goals just kept coming.
Broncos drop 4-1 decision to Pats
A three goal first period was an outcome the Swift Current Broncos couldn’t overcome as their four game win streak came to an end in a 4-1 defeat from the Regina Pats Friday night.
