Rebels select two at WHL Priority Draft

The Red Deer Rebels made two selections today at the 2024 WHL U.S. Priority Draft.

With the 15th overall pick in round one, the Rebels selected defenceman Nikolas Ferry from Los Angeles, California. In 68 games with the Los Angeles Kings U14 AAA team this season, Ferry recorded 20 points.

In the second round, 37th overall, the Rebels selected defenceman Bodi Anerson from Eagle River, Alaska. In 48 games with Team Alaska U14 Tier 1, Anderson had 14 points.

Emergency Alert test today

We are in the middle of Emergency Preparedness week. As part of this there will be a test of the Alberta Emergency Alert happening today, Wednesday, May 8th, at 11:55 am.

The test will be conducted at this time on both radio stations and mobile phones.

The Aberta Emergency Alert provides residents with information needed when an actual emergency is happening.

High School aviation program a soaring success

Chinook’s Edge is wrapping up its aviation career pathways program, which allowed six students to attend ground school during April. The Chinook’s Edge students, as well as six students from Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, were sponsored in the program by Sky Wings Aviation, with students covering the cost of books and transportation to the ground school. Students attended the facility three times each week during evenings, and on weekends.

Of the Chinook’s Edge students all six are considering pursuing next steps in aviation, including gaining a private pilot’s license.

RDP receives $250,000 to Support Land Based Learning and Reconciliation Space at Red Deer Polytechnic

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) has received a $250,000 pledge from Scotiabank to support the establishment of the Land Based Learning and Reconciliation Initiative. Part of the broader ScotiaRISE effort, this initiative aims to create a dedicated space on campus for learning, community engagement and the promotion of Indigenous traditions and teachings.

Town of Blackfalds recognizes youth volunteers 

The Town of Blackfalds celebrated the dedication of youth volunteers in the community during the Youth Recognition Night on May 2.   

The event featured a red carpet, live music, performances, and presentations of the Dylan Stork Youth Ambassador Award, and the Leaders of Tomorrow Awards to celebrate National Youth Week, recognizing the involvement of young people in the community.

Wind damage causing power outages in Red Deer County

According to Fortis Alberta, fallen trees have caused damage to some power lines in Red Deer County.

This includes Spruce View area. Fortis says the majority of customers have been restored, but local crew will have to complete repairs to equipment damaged by fallen trees before power can be restored to the remaining customers.

Current estimate is 3pm for power on

Penhold Fire Chief appointed to province’s Emergency Medical Services Standing Committee

The Town of Penhold's Fire Chief has been appointed to represent the province’s Medical First Response (MRF) agencies on the Alberta Emergency Medical Services Standing Committee (AEMSSC).   

Sean Pendergast was appointed by Health Minister Adriana LaGrange.   

Sylvan Lake holds open house on Centennial Street Redevelopment project

On Tuesday, May 7th, The Town of Sylvan Lake held an open house on the topic of the Centennial Street Redevelopment Project.

Residents of Sylvan Lake were invited to come and check out the plan as well as express their concerns and ideas on the major development for the town.

Eric Boudreau, The Engineering Services Manager for Sylvan Lake talked about the project.

"I think it's going to mean a lot to the town. It's going to make it feel more attractive and a lot easier for people to use. It will be a lot safer, and people are going to want to be here."
