Special Easter egg hunt this Saturday

If you are looking for an Easter themed event for the whole family, The Metis local 492, Shiny Mountains Living Community Services and Urban Aboriginal Voices Society are hosting a hunter, gatherer inspired egg hunt.

The event will run from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm at Rotary Park in Red Deer.

Sylvan Lake expanding water conservation program

The Town of Sylvan Lake is expanding water conservation efforts from April to October. 

In response to a letter received from the provincial government, requesting action on drought, the town is adding two months to the annual mandatory water conservation program, and two additional hours every day.

Utility construction to start in Grandview next week

An underground utility construction project to upgrade water, sanitary, and storm mains is starting in the Grandview neighbourhood next week.   

The upgrades will require road closures along 43A Avenue, 43 Avenue, Ross (50 Street), and 47 Street over the next several months.   

To lessen impacts to nearby residents and motorists, the project will be completed in four phases, weather permitting:

The nominations are in for the City of Red Deer’s upcoming by-election. 

“This is history in the making,” said Jessica Robinson, Returning Officer for The City of Red Deer. “For the first time, Red Deer residents will take to the polls to fill a vacant councillor seat, and these 10 candidates have added their names on the ballot.”  

 

Canadian bridges are safe, officials say after U.S. bridge rammed by ship, collapses

Canadian authorities tried to reassure the public about the safety of bridges in the country following the collapse of a bridge in Baltimore, Md., early Tuesday morning after it was rammed by a container ship.

Halifax Harbour Bridges, which operates the two spans across the harbour between Halifax and Dartmouth, said it has taken steps to mitigate the risks of collisions between ships and bridges. The Crown corporation says it is notified by the port authority every time a commercial vessel is scheduled to pass underneath the spans.

Trudeau says premiers complaining about carbon price didn't pitch better ideas

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is pushing back against premiers who are asking him to cancel an upcoming increase to the federal carbon price, saying they have not proposed better ideas to fight climate change. 

In a reply to the seven provincial leaders on Tuesday, Trudeau said the last time they discussed the issue in 2022, their governments either didn't propose alternative solutions or couldn't meet federal standards for reducing emissions. 

Two Chinook’s Edge students advance to provincial skills competition

Chinook’s Edge students demonstrated the skills they have learned in the trade and technology areas during the regional Skills Canada competitions.  

Two Chinook’s Edge students are moving forward to the provincial skills competition in May.  

Travis Lorenz, an Ecole H.J. Cody student, won silver in construction at regionals, and Johan Eriksson, a Didsbury High School student, won bronze.   

Canadian Cattle Young Leaders Program application deadline coming up March 31


The Canadian Cattle Association's Young Leaders Program has helped to mentor 180 participants in the beef industry.

The CYL program was established in 2010 as an industry succession tool for the beef sector. 

CCA Youth Programs and Engagement Manager Jessica Radau says the program is open to young people 18-35 from across Canada involved in all areas of the beef supply chain.

Red Deer RCMP warn public of counterfeit currency

The Red Deer RCMP are alerting the public to look out for counterfeit currency.

Police have received multiple reports of transactions where $50 and $100 counterfeit bills were used or attempted to be used. Anyone in the area who handles currency is alerted to be on the lookout for suspicious bills, and if they come into contact with it, report it to police.
