Rebels give up three power play goals in loss to Hurricanes
The Red Deer Rebels saw their three-game win streak end Saturday night at the Centrium falling 4-0 to the Lethbridge Hurricanes in front of almost 4,400 fans.
The Hurricanes won their franchise-record ninth consecutive road game putting up three power play goals against the Rebels.
Red Deer was called for a double-minor late in the first period leading to a pair of Lethbridge power play markers.
The Hurricanes would add to their lead in the third, again scoring on a four-minute power play.

Board of Directors announced for Red Deer Homeless Foundation
The Homeless Foundation for Red Deer Region announced the establishment of its Society on February 5, 2024. This was at the inaugural Member Meeting, held at the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre.
“When the Homelessness Taskforce presented their recommendations in April 2024, we committed to establishing a Homeless Foundation (Society) in Red Deer by December 31, 2024 – and we are proud to say, mission accomplished,” says Lyn Radford, Founding President and Chair of the Foundation.
Feds delay capital gains tax hike
The federal government has deferred its planned increase to the capital gains inclusion rate, pushing the implementation date from June 25, 2024, to January 1, 2026. Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced the decision, citing economic and administrative concerns as tax season approaches.
"The deferral of the increase to the capital gains inclusion rate will provide certainty to Canadians, whether they be individuals or business owners, as we quickly approach tax season," said LeBlanc. "Given the current context, our government felt that it was the responsible thing to do."
Rebels win third straight wearing fan-designed jerseys
The Red Deer rebels put up three goals in the first period en route to a 4-2 win over Moose Jaw Friday night at the Centrium.
The Rebels scored shorthanded, even-strength, and on the power play to build a 3-0 lead.
Red Deer has won three straight, the last two being wins over the Warriors. The Rebels were coming off back-to-back shutouts with 3-0 wins over Regina and Moose Jaw last weekend.
Samuel Drancak opened the scoring shorthanded as he lifted a shot high past the short side of Warriors goalie Michael Hutchison.
Olds College students to help with building renovation preliminary work
Olds College of Agriculture and Technology is preparing for the renovation of the W.J. Elliott (Trades) Building this summer.
The three-year project, funded primarily by the Alberta government, will enhance the building to better serve students and the community.
Before construction begins, some preliminary work will take place around the building, starting with tree removal.

Update: QEII now cleared near Innisfail
Update- Sat, Feb 8;th 10:53 a.m.
According to 511 Alberta, and Innisfail RCMP, both the southbound and northbound lanes of the QEII near Innisfail have been cleared. The highway was closed at around 4:30 pm on Friday due to an overturned tanker. Watch for heavy traffic congestion in the area.
Update - Sat, Feb. 8 - 8:00 a.m.
Southbound QEII near Range Road 362, just north of Innisfail, remains closed Saturday morning due to a tanker rollover that occurred Friday afternoon.
Northbound QEII is now open.
