Rebels end eight-game homestand on losing note

The Red Deer Rebels wrapped up their eight-game homestand with a 3-2 loss Saturday night at the Centrium against Swift Current.

The Rebels opened the scoring at 8:02 of the second period when Nishaan Parmer found the back of the net.

The Broncos would take the lead on second period goals by Brady Birnie and Trae Wilke.

Beckett Hamilton tied it up early in the third, but Luke Mistelbacher would be the hero for Swift Current scoring the game-winning goal at 7:54 of the final period.

RDP’s Red Hot Science program recognized nationally

Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) is being recognized on the national stage for creating innovative experiences for Indigenous youth.  

Actua, Canada’s leading science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) youth outreach organization, presented RDP with the Actua Experience Award at its 2025 National Conference.   

Eagles push past Generals with late surge in Vanberg Cup opener

The Innisfail Eagles have jumped out to 1-0 lead in the best-of-seven final in the North Central Senior AA Hockey League.

The Eagles scored a pair of goals late in the game to seal the 5-3 victory Saturday night against the defending Vanberg Cup champion Lacombe Generals at Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex.

Mike Marianchuk opened the scoring for the Eagles late in the first period before Craig Gans responded for the Generals.

Alberta increasing payments to municipalities for tax-exempt provincial properties

The Alberta government is reversing past cuts to the Grants in Place of Taxes (GIPOT) program, committing to full restoration by 2026.

Budget 2025 increases GIPOT funding from $38 million to $55.3 million, covering 75 per cent of eligible provincial properties' municipal property tax value. In 2026, payments will rise to $75.3 million, covering the full amount that municipalities would receive if the properties were taxable. By 2027, funding is projected to increase to $79.3 million.

Tigers end Rebels three-game win streak with 7-1 victory

The Red Deer Rebels three-game win streak came to an end Friday night as the home side fell to the red-hot Medicine Hat Tigers 7-1.

Medicine Hat scored 1:26 into the contest when Ryder Ritchie scored his first of three goals on the night.

The Tigers would score two more in the first to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room at the first intermission.

Ritchie netted his second of the night 3:10 into the second to make it 4-0.

The Rebels only goal of the night would come just over a minute later when Nolan Schmidt scored his third goal of the season.

Generals expecting big crowd for Vanberg Cup opener against rival Innisfail

The North Central Senior AA Hockey League finals get underway Saturday night in Lacombe at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex with the Generals hosting the Innisfail Eagles.

Lacombe is undefeated during this year's playoff run, sweeping the first two best-of-five series against Westlock and Stony Plain.

Innisfail has only lost once, sweeping the first round against Devon, before beating Wetaskiwin in four games.
