Canadians waiting to see if Trump's tariff threat materializes

Canadian officials are anxiously waiting to see if U.S. President Donald Trump follows through on his threat to slap Canada with devastating tariffs Saturday.

Trump said Friday he is considering lowering tariffs on Canadian oil to 10 per cent after the White House confirmed he is going forward with 25 per cent levies on imports from Canada and Mexico.

Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said Friday night in Washington, D.C., that it was still not clear what would happen after Trump's latest comments.

Bashaw rallying for Kraft Hockeyville arena upgrade 

The Bashaw Arena has been nominated for the Kraft Hockeyville contest.   

Jackie Northey, Executive Director of the Bashaw Adult Learning Council nominated the arena for the contest, and since then, it has turned into a community effort.  

“We’re trying to engage the community and inspire them to keep posting, liking, and sharing stories, and submitting photographs,” Northey said.  

Clearwater County and Mountain View County ICC members meet to discuss common interests

On January 13, 2025, members of the Clearwater County and Mountain View County Intermunicipal Collaboration Committee (ICC) met to discuss common interests and intermunicipal services.

This was accomplished, in part, by reviewing the existing Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework (ICF) agreement.

White House says Trump's 25 per cent tariffs coming Saturday

President Donald Trump will implement 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports on Saturday as promised, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Friday.

"I was just with the president in the Oval Office and I can confirm that tomorrow, the Feb. 1 deadline that President Trump put in to place in a statement several weeks ago, continues," Leavitt said. 

Leavitt denied a news report that said the devastating duties might be delayed until March.

Rocky council exploring disc golf course locations  

Public engagement sessions are now underway to determine the feasibility of a disc golf course in Rocky Mountain House.  

On Jan. 29, the town held an open house, that included a presentation from the Central Alberta Disc Golf Association (CADGA), and the Town Recreation Director, followed by a question-and-answer period.   

Bentley firefighters awarded at AGM

Monday night, January 27th, The Bentley Fire Department held their Annual General Meeting (AGM).

During the meeting, some members received medals for Years of Service and others were recognized with the Alberta Emergency Services Medal.

City of Lacombe holds Open House to discuss potential changes to Land Use Bylaw

The City of Lacombe held an Open House Thursday evening at the LMC to gather feedback on potential changes to the Land Use Bylaw.

"We're looking at possible changes to the Land Use Bylaw, which would allow stand-alone offices and retail sales in the Light Industrial District," explained Senior Development Officer Jennifer Kirk. "Right now, currently you can have those if they're accessory or smaller to the main use happening."

Update: Thick fog to continue into evening

Environment Canada has issued a fog advisory for areas north of Calgary including Mountain View County.

Sundre, Olds and Didsbury are included in the advisory, which covers sections of the QEII.

Low visibility in fog will continue this evening.

Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero.

Travel is expected to be hazardous due to reduced visibility in some locations.

Olds College part of national network to receive federal grant

Olds College of Agriculture and Technology is included in a network of 38 post-secondary institutions to receive $24 million in Lab to Market funding from the federal government.   

The network includes 24 Technology Access Centres, 610 business mentors, and over 2,100 applied research and industry specialists.  

Update: Collision scene cleared on QEII north of Red Deer

Motorists travelling southbound on the QEII approaching Highway 11A near Red Deer experienced delays this morning due to a motor vehicle collision.

Emergency crews were on the scene.

511 Alberta is reporting that the QEII contains icy sections with blowing snow.
