Lacombe police urge vigilance after multiple thefts

Lacombe police are investigating a string of thefts that took place between Sept. 12 and Sept. 15 during the evening and overnight hours.

The incidents under investigation include:

  • Sept. 12–13: Theft of tires and rims from a truck at Lacombe Ford. The property is valued at more than $8,000. CCTV footage has been reviewed, and the investigation is ongoing.

  • Sept. 13–14: Theft of a battery from a holiday trailer in the 4500 block of 45 Street.

Rebels set opening night roster

The Red Deer Rebels have finalized their opening night roster for the 2025-26 WHL regular season.

The club begins the campaign with 25 players, including 14 forwards, eight defencemen and three goaltenders.

Ontario premier urges Carney to maintain tariff on Chinese EVs despite canola levy

Canada needs to maintain its 100 per cent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said in an open letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday.

Ford said the measure is critical to securing a trade deal with the U.S. and protecting Canada's auto sector.

"If the federal government removes its tariffs against Chinese-made EVs, you will contradict and undermine months of engagement with U.S. officials and lawmakers about the need to protect and enhance our highly integrated cross-border automotive supply chains," Ford writes.

Alberta's Smith directs her minister to secure provincial control over immigration

Premier Danielle Smith is directing her jobs minister to use all legal means possible to give Alberta more control over immigration.

In a new mandate letter given to Joseph Schow, Smith says Alberta needs more control over immigration to ensure the province sees sustainable levels of newcomers.

The letter says Canadian citizens should have first access to jobs and that young people should be prioritized over temporary foreign workers.

Immigration is increasingly becoming a focal point for Smith and her government. 

Lacombe’s history captured in new museum photo exhibit

The Lacombe Museum is bringing local history into focus.

The next exhibition to come to the Lacombe Museum is a feature on the history of Lacombe through the photographs of local photographers who lived and worked in the area.

The exhibit, called "Lacombe Through the Lens", captures the town’s history from the perspective of local photographers like Ben Cameron, Mark Hanna, and J.A. Brown, just to name a few.

Red Deer open house celebrates resilience of military families

Behind every Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) member is a family who serves in their own way.

To recognize their resilience and sacrifices, the Calgary Military Family Resource Centre (Calgary MFRC), together with 41 Signal Regiment, 2 Squadron Red Deer, is hosting a Military Family Appreciation Day open house Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. at Cormack Armoury.

Military Family Appreciation Day, observed nationally on the third Friday of September, highlights the essential role families play in supporting CAF members through relocations, deployments and transitions.

Alberta defends notwithstanding clause in arguments for Bill 21 Supreme Court case

The Alberta government says the notwithstanding clause is an essential part of the Canadian constitution and the country's top court should not undermine it.

The province’s attorney general filed its arguments this morning in a landmark Supreme Court of Canada case over Quebec’s secularism law, known as Bill 21. 

Alberta says the notwithstanding clause was a "hard-fought and hard-won compromise" during constitutional negotiations, and preserves the provinces' parliamentary sovereignty. 

Lacombe Minor Baseball to mark provincial wins with banner raising

Lacombe Minor Baseball will celebrate two of its teams with a banner-raising ceremony at Diamond Edge Baseball on Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.

The U11 Community A Tier 4 and U18 AA Tier 6 Dodger squads will see their provincial banners raised for the first time at the new facility that helped develop their game.

Opened in February, the Diamond Edge facility has been a “huge factor” in player growth, said Shannon Bruns, president of Lacombe Minor Baseball.

All-Queens Rodeo Team ready to represent Red Deer Polytechnic

The Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Rodeo team is gearing up for the new Canadian Collegiate Rodeo Association (CCRA) season with a fresh look and plenty of talent.

This year’s squad is made up entirely of Queens, seven dedicated student-athletes who are eager to showcase their skills in rodeo arenas across the Prairies.

“We have a young team of all Queens this season,” said Trina Carroll, RDP Student Life and Rodeo Team Coordinator. “They all have a strong background in their individual events. I am excited to watch these ladies compete.”

Central Alberta farmers invited to explore innovative hay solutions

With harvest season underway across Central Alberta, producers are being offered a chance to dig deeper into hay storage, feed analysis, and sustainable practices through an event hosted by the Central Alberta Forage and Livestock Association (CAFLA).

Titled “Hay! Let’s Talk Storage,” the afternoon workshop runs this Friday, (September 19) from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Hillside Community Centre near Wetaskiwin.

The program includes lunch and features presentations from industry experts as well as insights from local producers.
