Wetaskiwin murder suspect breaks curfew, on the run after assaulting police officer

The Wetaskiwin RCMP are seeking public assistance in locating 31-year old Wetaskiwin resident, Talsa Ashlee Cardinal.

On March 29, Cardinal was released on a release order for First Degree Murder out of Edmonton Police Service.

She was released with a 24-hour curfew.

On Oct. 19, Cardinal was observed breaching her release order.

Wetaskiwin RCMP attempted to arrest Cardinal for failure to comply with her release order, but she assaulted the police officer, resisted arrest, and fled.

Red Deer to “Go Blue” in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month 

October is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre (CACAC) has partnered with Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) to raise awareness around the issue.  

To spread awareness, the advocacy centre is encouraging Central Albertans to find ways to “Go Blue,” today (Oct. 24).    

The simplest way is to wear blue, take a picture, and post it using #GoBlueAB.

The third annual Pan Continental Curling Championships gets underway this weekend at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex in Lacombe.
 
The competition serves as a qualifier for the world championships for all World Curling Member Associations from the Americas and Pacific-Asia zones. The Pan Continental Championships has replaced the former world championship qualification routes of the Pacific Asia Curling Championships and the Americas Challenge.

The Rotary Club of Lacombe is gearing up to host its third annual Taste of Lacombe event, taking place on October 26 at the Lacombe Memorial Centre.

The evening is a fundraiser for the Cranna Lake Project.

Rotary member Ingrid Luymes says Taste of Lacombe is a great way to sample local restaurants and beverage providers.

"It's a really fun night where people get to dress up, if they want to, and basically just come and eat appetizers and drink samples all night long," she remarked.

Have you fired up your furnace yet? Tips to get ready for winter

Home heating systems across the region have been firing up over the past few weeks as temperatures have started to drop, especially overnight.

Marty Bruin, general manager of Bruin's Plumbing & Heating, says if you haven't tested out your furnace yet, you'll want to fire it up before it gets really cold.

He had some advice for homeowners.

"A common thing is to check their furnace filter, which depending on the filter, it may not need to be changed every month but we recommend that people check their furnace at least once monthly," suggested Bruin.

Clearwater County elects Reeve, Deputy Reeve during organizational meeting

At their organizational meeting on Oct. 22, 2024, Clearwater County elected Michelle Swanson as Reeve and Sydney Graham as Deputy Reeve. 

Council also appointed various board representatives from Council and the community. Board and committee appointments for Council members remain the same as the previous term.

Section of 50th Street closed due to water leak repair

Motorists in Red Deer are being advised of a traffic disruption on 50 (Ross) Street until tomorrow (Oct. 25) as crews repair a water leak.

Traffic is detoured along 45 Avenue to 53 Street as 50 Street is closed from 45 Avenue to 47 Avenue.

City crews anticipate opening the section of 50 Street during business hours on tomorrow, but advise drivers to avoid the area if possible and give themselves plenty of time to reach their destination for the next 24 or more hours.

Alberta, Ottawa discuss funding for homelessness, more talks expected in coming days

The federal housing minister and the Alberta minister in charge of the file have spoken about funding to tackle encampments and homelessness.

The phone conversation comes after Housing Minister Sean Fraser said in a statement Tuesday that Alberta, Ontario and Saskatchewan hadn't formally responded to an offer of funding.

Officials say that during the call, Jason Nixon, Alberta's minister of seniors, community and social services, expressed his government's continued willingness to partner with Ottawa and to cost-match the additional federal funding.

5 million adults without primary care, surgeries returning to normal: CIHI report

A new report by the Canadian Institute for Health Information says 83 per cent of adults in this country have a regular primary-care provider, but that still leaves 5.4 million adults without one. 

It says seniors 65 years and older are more likely to have access to a family doctor or nurse practitioner than younger adults between 18 and 34. 

Access to primary care is highest in Ontario and lowest in Nunavut.
