Red Deer housing prices rise as inventory continues to fall

The average price of a home in Red Deer rose to $420,816 in March, a 20 per cent increase from the same month last year, according to the Central Alberta Realtors Association.

The number of residential sales in March totalled 149, a 4.5 per cent decrease year-over-year. At the same time, new listings reached 236, a 13 per cent increase from March 2024.

Inventory levels continued to decline, with a 15 per cent drop year-over-year.

QEII north of Airdrie reopens after late-night shutdown

The QEII northbound reopened before 3 a.m. Tuesday, after a jackknifed semi shut it down for several hours between Township Road 294 and Carstairs. Didsbury RCMP warned of icy conditions and urged drivers to avoid unnecessary travel at the time of the incident.

"Didsbury RCMP is currently on scene of a motor vehicle collision involving a jackknifed truck on [the] QEII, near Township Road 294," police said in a statement issued just after midnight. "Highway 2 northbound will be closed in the area until further notice."

Alberta's request to question fired health executive over confidential emails granted

A judge has granted Alberta's government its request to question the former head of the provincial health authority about confidential emails she is accused of keeping and sharing without permission, including to media.

The government's request was made last month when it filed for an injunction in the high-profile lawsuit launched by Athana Mentzelopoulos, the former chief executive of Alberta Health Services.

Snowfall leads to slippery roads across Central Alberta

Drivers across Central Alberta are being urged to take extra caution this morning after the region received a fresh blanket of snow overnight.

Road conditions have deteriorated in several areas, with the QEII listed as snow-covered and slippery. Rain is also falling some areas.

The primary road condition is covered snow, with secondary hazards including icy sections, slush, and snow accumulation on shoulders.

Visibility remains fair, though local blowing snow may impact driving at times.

Poilievre vows not to impose a home equity tax as Liberals, NDP talk health care

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is claiming the Liberals will impose a tax on Canadians' home equity if they're re-elected as the federal election campaign enters its final week.
