Local entrepreneurs learned marketing know-how during a Community Futures Central Albert Digital Marketing Lunch and Learn on May 23. 

About 25 entrepreneurs attended the Digital Service Squad (DSS) program, which links small business owners and start-ups with tech-savvy marketing professionals for one-on-one coaching.   

Little Free Pantry-A great resource for Sylvan Lake residents

The Sylvan Lake Community Food Bank has been serving Sylvan Lake and area residents for many years providing an emergency food service for those in need. Unfortunately, because this is a volunteer service they are not open every day.

For those in need, there is an alternative, The Little Free Pantry at the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library.

WCPS appoints new Education Services Coordinator

Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS) is welcoming Kaylene Reddekopp as a new Education Services Coordinator.   

The role focuses on K-12 curriculum, instruction, assessment, and leadership. 

Reddekopp earned a Bachelor of Education from the University of Alberta and a Master of Education from the University of Lethbridge. She holds an Alberta Leadership Quality Standard Certification and graduated from the Aspiring Leaders Program.  

Watch for Red Deer road construction in major intersections

Over the next three weeks, from Sunday, May 26 to Friday, June 14, city crews will be performing a number of painting operations in and around the major intersections within the city. Work will be performed from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. as to minimize disruptions to traffic flow.

While all intersections will remain open while work is performed, intermittent closures to portions of the intersection will be required. Please anticipate minor delays or impacts to traffic.

Didsbury High School band director receives national award

Didsbury High School band director, Kirk Wassmer, was named this year’s recipient of the I. Keith Mann/NAC Orchestra Outstanding Band Director Award.  

The award has been given to exceptional band directors from across Canada since 2002, in remembrance of Innisfail High School band director, Keith Mann.  

RCMP adds ribbon skirt to uniform in effort to build bridges with Indigenous people

The RCMP has added a traditional Indigenous ribbon skirt to its uniform.

Commissioner Mike Duheme has announced on social media that officers can now wear the ribbon skirts when donning the red serge.

He says the addition demonstrates the RCMP's commitment to reconciliation, equity, diversity and inclusion.

The RCMP did not immediately provide more details.

Officers have also been allowed to incorporate eagle feathers and the Métis sash into their uniforms.

JJ Collett Natural Area Annual Spring Walk on today

If you are looking for something to do today, (weather permitting), check out the JJ Collett Natural Area - Annual Spring Walk 2024.

The area is located near Morningside, and is very popular for those wanting to enjoy nature.

This year's walk is happening today, Sunday, May 26th. You are asked to meet at the kiosk/main staging area at 2:00 pm.

There will be guided tours with local naturalists who will identify plants and wildlife and all the sights of the spring season.

Refreshments and snacks will be provided after!

House of Commons committee recommends feds tackle 'excessive' profits in food sector

The federal government should consider policies to tackle “excessive net profits” in the food industry, the House of Commons committee studying food prices said in its latest report. 

The committee recommended the government look into ways to address these profits in "monopolistic and oligopolistic sectors in the food supply chain," which it says are driving up prices for farmers and consumers.

"Enough is Enough UCP" protest held in Sylvan Lake

On Saturday, May 25th, a protest against the current Alberta UCP party was held at Centennial Park in Sylvan Lake. This was in conjunction with a province-wide protest called #Enough is Enough UCP that was also held in Red Deer, Edmonton, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Vermillion and Grand Prairie.
