HTA Knights move onto provincial final
The HTA Knights took home the Southern Alberta Championship and will now head to the Provincial Finals after defeating the George McDougall Mustangs 57-23 on Saturday afternoon.
Malik Robbins opened the scoring in the game after returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown.
Ben Haden would force a fumble shortly after which was picked up by Jack Bjorge who got them in scoring position. Ryan Chirzynski would kick the field goal to get the Knights up 10-0 early.
Snowfall Warning issued for Foothills County, with snow expected to continue overnight
Foothills County is currently under a snowfall warning.
It was issued by Environment & Climate Change Canada just after 3:30 p.m.
The snowfall is expected to continue overnight, with 5-10 cm expected.
As such, they anticipate that rush hour traffic may see some delays, as it did in the morning.
They're advising drivers to leave some extra time and to prepare for changing road conditions.
NDC JV Boys Volleyball go perfect in host tournament
A week after taking the Zone Championships, the Notre Dame Collegiate Timberwolves hosted a zone tournament, with the Junior Boys volleyball team putting up a perfect run.
The JV Boys started the 20-team zone tournament with a clean sweep in the round-robin portion, cementing their semi-final appearance with a bye. The JV Boys continued to fuel off the home crowd at the T-Wolf Den as they won their semi-final appearance against Diamond Valley's Oilfield Drillers.
The finals saw the T-Wolves and Didsbury High School face off.
High River couple eyeing early retirement after $2,000,000 lottery win
A High River couple is sliding into retirement earlier than expected after a $2 million lotto win.
Theresa Bourdeau and Charles King won the hefty lump sum on the Oct. 5 Western 649 draw, but it took a bit of time for the to realize it.
At first, Bordeau thought they'd only won $2,000, even after checking multiple times.
It was only after she told her partner that they realized the full scope of their win.
"She said, 'We won $2,000!' I told her to let me take a look at it," said King in a release from the WCLC.
Highway 2 north of Okotoks now clear but roads remain slick
Highway 2 at Dunbow Road is now clear of obstructions after a rough start to the morning, but it's still slow going in the area.
Okotoks RCMP were on scene this morning (Nov. 18) guiding cars around about a dozen stopped semi-trucks following last night's dump of snow and the following morning's cold conditions.
The road has now been cleared, but the Alberta 511 website still shows partial snow coverage and low visibility in the area.
Oilers come home empty handed
The Okotoks Oilers were in B.C. over the weekend for their road trip and came home with two losses.
On Friday, the Green and Gold were in Vernon to face the Vipers.
It marked the second time both teams have faced off this year with the Oilers taking the first game. Friday night, however,saw the Vipers take the win in a 7-4 hockey game.
Olivier Ciarlo made the start in net with Simon Westling coming in relief during the first period.
Michael Kowalski opened the scoring in the game with his third goal on the season coming 2:37 into the game.
Bisons stay at the top of the HJHL Southern Division
The Carstar Okotoks Bisons continue to stampede over their competition with two wins during their road trip this past weekend.
With the two wins, the Herd sits above the Medicine Hat Cubs for the top spot in the HJHL Southern Division as they hold 29 points to the Cubs 26. The two wins came from a 6-3 win over the Airdrie Techmation Thunder and then a 3-1 win over the Rams in Rocky Mountain House.
Flyers string two wins together for first time this season
The High River Flyers had a blissful weekend as they picked up four points and strung two wins together for the first time this season.
Neither win was easy, as both games took extra time.
The Flyers have been getting comfortable in close games as they have gone to extra time in five of their last seven games. High River finished off the Coaldale Copperheads with a 5-4 win in OT on Friday and then beat the Three Hills Thrashers 6-5 in a shootout on Saturday.
One person dead after Highway 1 collision involving over 12 vehicles
One person died in a collision involving over a dozen vehicles near Strathmore today (Nov. 18).
Gleichen, Bassano, and Brooks RCMP responded to the collision, which happened in the westbound lanes of Highway 1.
A 51-year-old man from Redcliff was pronounced deceased at the scene, and no other injuries were reported.
The road was closed for over six hours, and it's since been reopened with all affected vehicles having been towed.
Road conditions are believed to have played a role in the collision.
Driving conditions leave many in the ditch
The snow that fell overnight greeted motorists this morning leaving many in the ditch.
The sand plows were out aplenty since the early morning hours however the driving conditions caused by the snow caused many motorist's trouble.
From school buses running late or being cancelled there were many motorists who were late getting to work this morning.
Okotoks RCMP are advising of very poor driving conditions on Highway 2 at Dunbow Road.
They are advising motorists to avoid the area.
