National defence is becoming an increasingly thorny topic for Prime Minister Mark Carney's government as Canada comes under heavy pressure from its allies to do more and spend more.

But with just weeks to go until NATO member nations assemble in the Netherlands for a summit that could put Ottawa in the hot seat on defence spending, several of his ministers took the unusual step of removing themselves from discussions with defence reporters this week at Canada's largest defence industry show.

Update: Reports of motor vehicle collision in Airdrie; motorists asked to exercise caution

A motor vehicle collision in the vicinity of 40th Avenue and 8th Street has been cleared.

On Thursday afternoon, motorists reported delays due to the collision, though there was no information available on the number of vehicles involved or the extent of injuries.

Drivers were asked to exercise caution in the area as emergency crews attended the scene.

Regulator finds no unprofessional conduct after 2024 Calgary water main failure

Alberta’s engineering regulator says it found no evidence of unskilled practice or unprofessional conduct in the City of Calgary’s management of the Bearspaw South water main that burst in June 2024 — but a forensic investigation commissioned by the city noted that the rupture was caused, among other things, by extensive corrosion, chloride contamination, and brittle wire failure in a 1975-era pipe expected to last a century.

The rupture triggered water restrictions in Airdrie and other municipalities across the region, lasting through the summer and into the fall.

Airdrie council to hold special meeting over development-related enforcement matter

Airdrie City Council will hold a special meeting on Tuesday, June 10, to review an enforcement order regarding alleged unauthorized development and damage to city streets on Edwards Way.

According to a notice posted on the City of Airdrie website, the meeting will begin at 11 a.m. in Council Chambers and will be open to the public in person and online. Mayor Peter Brown called the meeting under the Municipal Government Act and the city’s Procedure Bylaw.

Didsbury to shut down town-run child care program after reported deficits

The Town of Didsbury will end its municipally managed before- and after-school care program, effective June 26, 2025, following a May 27 council vote to approve a service level amendment, the town announced on Wednesday.

The Didsbury Out of School Care Association (DOSCA) program will conclude at the end of the 2024–25 school year.

The town said the DOSCA Summer Fun program will operate as planned for this year and "will then be re-evaluated at the end of the summer."

Airdrie hosts key public transit discussions

Earlier this week, Airdrie played host to the Canadian Urban Transit Association's (CUTA) Prairie Chapter meeting.

According to the CUTA website, they help connect the public transit industry, advocate for investment and support from governments and facilitate conversations and connections to help transit professionals keep up with the latest.

At the Prairie Chapter meeting, members from four different provinces and territories attended, including Alberta, Northwest Territories, Manitoba and Yukon.

Rocky View Schools calls for quicker action on school projects

On May 21, the Rocky View Schools (RVS) Board of Trustees met with the Honourable Martin Long, Minister of Infrastructure, and members of his team.

According to RVS, the Board shared key information about RVS, highlighted our top infrastructure advocacy priorities, and presented potential solutions aimed at streamlining the school construction and approval process.

"It is critical for RVS that new schools are built and ready to welcome students, staff and the community as quickly as possible."

Portable skate park returns to Airdrie

The City of Airdrie has installed its portable skate park on the east side of the city.

The park is located at the East Lake south parking lot, shared Jeff Hughes, who is the Operations Coordinator for the City of Airdrie Parks Department.

"It's the second year for our portable skate park. The first year was in the Ron Ebbeson Arena parking lot."

He shared that many residents enjoy having a second park.

"We have the in-ground, large skate park over on the west side (at Chinook Winds). Some residents like having one on the east side as well."
