Saskatchewan announces 2025 Agriculture Student Scholarship winners

Abbey Norek of Gerald is this year's Agriculture Student Scholarship grand-prize $6,000 winner.

Norek's winning video highlighted an urban-rural disconnect when it comes to agriculture. 

She proposed education and advocacy as key solutions to this issue. 

In her video presentation, she talked about her experience building a school garden using recycled materials, leading outreach programs on her family farm, and lobbying for agriculture electives in her school division.  

Jailed chicken farmer found to be in compliance for number of laying hens


Southern Alberta farmer has long-standing issues with supply-management system for smaller egg producers like himself.

A southern Alberta egg producer who had been jailed for missing a court date for violating the provincial laws governing egg production has passed a premises inspection by Egg Farmers of Alberta.

Henk Van Essen said an inspector only spent a few minutes inside his operation before coming back out and telling him he was in full compliance.

“They were so sure they were going to find thousands of chickens in this barn,” Van Essen said.

Airdrie’s fire chief issued a public warning about pets in vehicles during a weekend heat spike.

"It’s that time of year again to send this message out," Fire Chief Mike Pirie wrote in a Facebook post on Saturday. "The interior of vehicles become so hot, so fast, it’s cruel to leave animals in them. Cracking a window or leaving water has virtually no effect on the interior temperature."

Temperatures in Airdrie reached 26°C that day before dropping on Sunday.

Calgary, Rocky View grass fires follow wildfire response west of Sundre

Calgary fire crews tackled five brush fires Monday morning, following a weekend of grassfires and wildfire activity across Alberta.

The latest fires occurred after regional responders spent Saturday battling fast-moving blazes in Rocky View County and west of Sundre. Although temperatures dipped briefly on Sunday, conditions remain dry across much of the region, with gusty winds and little precipitation continuing into the week.

In 2024, the RCMP recorded 235 motorcycle crashes, 37 of which occurred in May. The collisions resulted in 204 injuries, with 26 fatalities.

With the 2025 riding season underway, Alberta RCMP reminds motorists and motorcyclists to drive attentively and follow traffic laws.

"Last May saw 37 motorcycle collisions," said Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, Alberta RCMP Traffic. "Let’s ensure this riding season is a safe one. If you’re in a vehicle, make sure to complete a full check before turning or changing lanes to ensure smaller vehicles or motorcycles are not in your path."

Executive director named for Calgary’s 2026 Grey Cup with Olds tie

Karen Dommett, a sports administrator who previously worked with Olds College athletics, has been appointed executive director of the 2026 Grey Cup.

The 113th edition of the CFL championship is scheduled for Nov. 15, 2026, at McMahon Stadium.

Dommett most recently served as general manager of the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games in Calgary and was manager of athlete services for the 2019 Canada Winter Games in Red Deer.

Record-breaking turnout for Know Where to Turn Run

Sunday was the annual Know Where to Turn Run in Airdrie, and it brought in much-needed funds.

The mission of the run is to support family violence services and supports in Airdrie and the surrounding areas.

Elizabeth Wyczynski, Community Relations Specialist at Community Links, explained it was a cold day, but well worth it.

"This was a huge year, record-breaking sponsorship levels, record-breaking participation. We had a total of 341 participants."

Local animal shelter's big cut raises big bucks

A head-shaving fundraiser brought in much-needed donations for Tails To Tell Animal Rescue in Crossfield.

On Sunday,  Edna Jackson, the hero and mentor of the shelter, had a goal of raising $1000.

"Just at the shelter alone, we brought in $800. In total, we're near the $3,000 mark now," shared Colleen Holden, board chair for the rescue.

According to Holden, she gave Jackson the good news of how much was raised on Sunday.

She was so ecstatic. It means the world to her. The shelter is her life, and she couldn't thank everybody enough."
