Calgary police chief resigns

Chief Constable Mark Neufeld resigned Friday after six years as head of the Calgary Police Service (CPS), the Calgary Police Commission announced in a news release. No further information was provided as to his resignation. The commission said it has appointed Katie McLellan as interim chief, effective immediately.

Following earlier media reports, Federal Conservative MP-elect Damien Kurek confirmed Friday afternoon that he intends to step aside for the current parliamentary session to allow Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to run in a by-election in the Alberta riding of Battle River–Crowfoot.

The announcement was posted to Kurek's social media accounts.

Update: Fire restriction and advisories in effect as weekend heats up

On Friday afternoon, the City of Airdrie enacted a fire advisory, due to what officials had advised were current and forecasted hot and dry weather conditions.

"The fire advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve. While campfires and backyard fires are currently allowed, they may be restricted in the future if conditions warrant. Residents are asked to exercise caution to ensure grassland or wildland fires do not start," officials stated in a written news release.

A section of Highway 566 east of Balzac has fully reopened after a motor vehicle collision shut down the road on Friday afternoon.

Liberals lose one seat in Quebec after validation process

The federal riding of Terrebonne in Quebec has gone from the Liberals' win column back to the Bloc Québécois after a postelection vote validation process.

Bloc candidate Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné, who had represented the riding since 2021, said in a social media post that she came out with a lead of 44 votes and that a judicial recount will take place.

"For someone to be officially elected, you have to wait until the end of this process," Sinclair-Desgagné wrote in French. "I hope to have the honour of representing Terrebonne again in the coming years."

Poilievre to run in Alberta riding as fellow MP offers to step aside

Federal Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he plans to run in the Alberta riding of Battle River–Crowfoot, following an offer from incumbent MP Damien Kurek to resign his seat.

Multiple media outlets, including The Canadian Press, are reporting that Kurek is expected to temporarily step aside to trigger a byelection, allowing Poilievre to seek a seat in the House of Commons. According to CP, the Conservative Party has confirmed Poilievre intends to run once a byelection is called. 

Alberta MP to step aside to allow Pierre Poilievre to run for seat in Parliament

Conservative MP Damien Kurek is set to step aside to allow Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to run in a byelection in the Battle River—Crowfoot riding in Alberta.

Kurek says he is "temporarily" stepping aside as MP for the riding, which he has held since 2019.

The Conservative party confirms that Poilievre will run in the Battle River—Crowfoot byelection once it's called.

Prairie Irrigation Update

Alberta

The St. Mary River Irrigation District (SMRID) is notifying irrigators that they are now accepting water orders.

For the 2025 irrigation season, water allocation will remain at 12 inches at the farm gate based on the recent Irrigation Water Supply Forecast from Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation.

Crews have started flushing lines and are charging the system for water startup, expected to be available across the entire district by May 5th to 9th.
