Alberta government and auditor at odds over lawyer involvement in health probe

The Alberta government and its auditor general are at odds over the province’s decision to bring lawyers directly into the investigation surrounding multimillion-dollar health contracts.

The issue arose after the Opposition NDP revealed a leaked email this week from Alberta Health that directs public servants to contact a lawyer to co-ordinate if auditor general Doug Wylie requests an interview as part of his investigation.

Poilievre promises tougher ethics rules, takes aim at Carney's assets

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is promising to tighten financial transparency rules for elected officials — and is using that promise to take aim at Liberal Leader Mark Carney.

Poilievre told a press conference in Ottawa on Sunday that if his party forms government, he'll ban what he calls "shadow lobbying."

Cochrane’s Dylan Pighin leads Blaze to national ringette title

Cochrane’s own Dylan Pighin helped lead the Zone 2 Blaze 19AA ringette team to a national title at the Canadian Ringette Championships in Ottawa this past weekend.

The championships, which began with opening ceremonies on March 30 and concluded on April 5, saw the Blaze go undefeated in eight games.

18-year-old Pighin is a former Cochrane High student and long-time Cochrane Ringette Association player who now leads the 19AA team says it was an unforgettable experience.

“We played teams from all over Canada. It was super fun.”

Mueller brings hometown pride to Canucks debut

A fanfare by the Canucks, family and friends made Ty Mueller's first taste of the NHL special.

The 22-year-old centre, who got his start in Cochrane Minor Hockey, was called up from the Abbotsford Canucks to centre one of Vancouver's top scoring lines against the Minnesota Wild on Saturday night.

Mueller played 15 shifts, totalling 10 minutes and 56 seconds of ice time between Brock Boeser and Jake DeBrusk.

Poilievre pledges veterans' supports; Carney offers cheaper access to parks, museums

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre promised to cut red tape and step up support for veterans Saturday, while Liberal Leader Mark Carney pledged to make visiting national parks and museums more affordable for Canadian families.

Poilievre unveiled his party's plan for veterans during a press conference in Nepean, the suburban Ottawa community that contains the neighbouring ridings where he and Carney are running. 

Carney did not have any public events scheduled. NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh's itinerary shows he will hold an evening event in Timmins, Ont.

Virtual forum to be held for Airdrie-Cochrane candidates

Voters in the Airdrie-Cochrane riding will have the opportunity to hear directly from federal candidates during a virtual forum on Tuesday, April 22. The event is being co-hosted by the Cochrane and Airdrie chambers of commerce.

The forum, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., aims to help residents and local businesses better understand the platforms and priorities of those vying to represent the region in Parliament ahead of the federal election on April 28.

Country fans in Cochrane are in for a treat this summer as Airdrie-based singer-songwriter Kyle McKearney joins the lineup for Bow Valley Boot Stomp, the town’s very own country music festival.

McKearney, whose roots lie just 30 minutes up the road in Airdrie, says he’s looking forward to playing to a local crowd.

“Yeah, yeah, I can't wait. I'm really looking forward to that,” McKearney said. “It's very close to home, first of all, and just looks like a good time from what I've seen so far. So I can't wait to be a part of it.”
