Heavy rain and wind set to soak Cochrane

A special weather statement is in effect for Cochrane, with a major storm system expected to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the area this weekend.

Rain is expected to begin Friday, with the heaviest amounts falling along the Alberta foothills. By Sunday afternoon, rainfall totals could range from 50 to 100 millimetres in most areas, with up to 200 millimetres possible in higher elevation regions.

Average family to save $280 per year from Liberal tax cut: PBO

The Leger poll — released as Canada copes with its second-worst wildfire season on record — says 23 per cent of Canadians who responded said they were personally affected by extreme weather events like heat waves, floods, fires and tornadoes over the last 12 months.

Timetable released on lifting of G7 Summit security measures

The RCMP-led Integrated Safety and Security Group (ISSG) has announced the lifting of several security measures, with more to follow, as foreign dignitaries begin departing the province from the G7 Leaders Summit. 

Airspace restrictions, including the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), were lifted at noon today.

The Controlled Access Zone (CAZ) around key summit venues will expire tonight at 11:59 p.m., ending the need for accreditation to enter those areas.

Awards launched to celebrate Cochrane’s small businesses

A new awards program has been launched to recognize the outstanding achievements of small businesses in Cochrane and surrounding area.

The Cochrane & District Chamber of Commerce unveiled the inaugural Business Excellence Awards this week, calling on residents to help celebrate the entrepreneurs, innovators, and community leaders who drive the local economy.

The awards build on the momentum of the recent “Find it in Cochrane. Shop local.” campaign and aim to highlight the vital role small businesses play in the community.

Traffic changes coming soon to Hwy 1A/22 interchange

Drivers in Cochrane should prepare for another round of traffic adjustments as major construction continues at the Highway 1A and 22 interchange.

According to a Town of Cochrane update, Alberta Transportation is implementing new traffic patterns starting the week of June 20, 2025.

“We know this project has made it harder to get around, especially for those living in Sunset,” the Town shares. “We truly appreciate your patience as the province completes this major upgrade.”

CHS students celebrate diversity at first-ever Culture Fest

Information on 25 cultures and nations was shared during the first-ever Culture Fest at Cochrane High School last week.

Over the course of a few hours, students were introduced to the cultural backgrounds of their peers. The event featured displays, food samples, and traditional clothing from around the world.

The celebration was organized by the school’s welcome club in partnership with Rocky View Immigrant Services (RVIS) through its new Enhanced Settlement Workers in Schools (ESWIS) initiative.

$3.4 million to support USask's Integrated Genomics for Sustainable Animal Agriculture and Environmental Stewardship Project

Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Heath MacDonald and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison today announced $3.4 million over four years to support the development of two new facilities at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) which includes the Omics Resource Centre at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) and Beef Reprotech facilities at the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence (LFCE).

County seeks public input on Springbank recreation plans

An open house will be held on June 19, 2025, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Springbank Heritage Centre. The event is part of ongoing efforts to explore potential recreation projects for county-owned land in the area.
