A private civilian aircraft was intercepted by fighter jets Sunday morning after violating restricted airspace above Kananaskis during the G7 Summit.

North American Aerospace Defense Command [NORAD], supporting the RCMP-led Integrated Safety and Security Group, deployed CF-18 Hornet jets from the Canadian region after the fixed-wing plane entered CYR 292 at about 11:05 a.m.

The restricted zone, centred over Kananaskis Village, was established as part of security protocols for the G7.

As Prime Minister Mark Carney gets ready to host U.S. President Donald Trump and other leaders at the G7 summit in Alberta, analysts say Canada's most important goal will be to keep the G7 from falling apart — even if that means not issuing a joint statement.

"Keeping this informal international organization together will, I think, be a mark of success," said Sen. Peter Boehm, a former diplomat who played a central role in Canada’s participation in the G7 for decades.

The historic ties and long-standing working relationship between the United Kingdom and Canada are not just reflections of the past, but are very much needed "in the here and now," British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Sunday. 

Starmer said the two Commonwealth members think and work alike, having collaborated for years on issues of security, defence, trade and the economy.

Starmer met with Prime Minister Mark Carney in Ottawa on Sunday before the two leaders headed for the G7 leaders' summit in Alberta.

Alberta’s own Jennie Harluk is bringing her voice, her stories and her full band to the Bow Valley Boot Stomp on Saturday, July 19.

“This one’s extra special,” says Harluk. “I’m from just outside of Cochrane, so playing this festival in front of a hometown crowd means a lot.”

Her set at Boot Stomp will include never-before-heard tracks and a taste of her evolving sound. While there’s no album planned just yet, new singles are on the way.

Thanks to the G7 Leaders' Summit, Cochrane-area residents have been treated to quite an air show.

It’s all part of the massive temporary security measures in place for the three-day gathering, which wraps up June 17.
