The final award in the SHSAA’s calendar for the year is a big one, bestowed on a tireless community volunteer in recognition of his decades of dedication to amateur sports.
Muenster’s Marvin Renneberg was recently awarded the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association’s Service Award at the SHSAA Annual General Meeting. This award is given annually by the SHSAA to honor those who have provided outstanding leadership and service and the promotion of high school athletics within their school athletic district, Marvin’s district being the Horizon Central Athletic Association. Marvin Renneberg grew up in St. Benedict.
Marvin taught briefly in Quinton, SK before settling in at Muenster School from 1984 until his retirement in 2011. While at Muenster School, Marvin was continually active coaching and administering high school sport since that time. He not only coached elite teams and individuals that won provincial championships but would also take on pretty much any team that needed a coach. He was not willing to see opportunity pass by for any of the students in his school. The wall of pictures of athletics accomplishments in Muenster School is massive, and Marvin had a direct impact on many and an indirect impact on most.
Marvin was also very adamant and successful in instilling the values inherent to the philosophy of high school sport in all his athletes. Muenster School’s reputation for excellence went beyond wins and losses under Marvin’s watch.
As an official, Marvin established himself as an excellent soccer official and carried this ability over to basketball, track, and volleyball when he saw there was a need. He also worked hard at recruiting and retaining officials.
Marvin was never afraid to take leadership roles. He was the commissioner for numerous provincial championships, prepared and maintained the track at St. Peter’s College for many championships, was the president of the local school athletics organization for many years, and was the District president the last 5 years of his career. With amalgamation, he was instrumental in creating the Constitution, Bylaws, and Policy documents for the newly formed HCAA. He also sat on the SHSAA executive council as the official’s representative from 2002-2006.
Marvin’s wife, Maureen, was a huge support and helper with many of Marvin’s endeavors. Marvin had the great privilege of raising and coaching his three children, Tyler, Nicole, and Dana, and they all have shared their father’s love of sport through high school sport and in their adult lives.
Since Marvin’s retirement, he has continued to act as the HCAA referee-in-chief for soccer each year and has been a key soccer official in the area. He has been the assigner and head official at many Provincial Championships held in the HCAA since, including this past fall in Humboldt. Marvin received the SHSAA Merit Award in 2007.
However, his outstanding and dedicated service within the former CDAA and current HCAA makes him most deserving of the SHSAA Service Award, and as a District, the HCAA deems it an unfortunate oversight that Marvin was not bestowed this honor years ago.
Thanks to the HCAA for the bio information.
