A faith-based movie shot in Winnipeg is just days away from premiering on the big screen.
Originally slated to debut in the fall, Ordinary Angels, starring two-time Academy Award winner Hilary Swank and “Reacher” star Alan Ritchson, will hit theatres on Friday.
The film, based on a true story, centres on Sharon Stevens (Hilary Swank), a fierce but struggling hairdresser in small-town Kentucky who discovers a renewed sense of purpose when she meets Ed Schmitt (Alan Ritchson), a widower working hard to make ends meet for his two daughters. With his youngest daughter waiting for a liver transplant, Sharon sets her mind to helping the family and will move mountains to do it. What unfolds is the inspiring tale of faith, everyday miracles, and ordinary angels.
"It's an exciting story to tell. And it's a beautifully told movie," said Andy Erwin, producer of Ordinary Angels. "People think 'I can't make a difference,' but you can make a difference just starting with one person. You can be an ordinary angel and find your purpose."
This film comes on the heels of Kingdom Story Company and Lionsgate's JESUS REVOLUTION, which was released on Feb. 24, 2023, and has become a breakout hit for the companies, taking in more than $40 million at the box office.
"It was a moment where God just really showed up in a powerful, significant way. Because of that, our parent company, Lionsgate, decided to let us do not just one more movie, but we got to do four more movies this year," said Erwin.
Andy says this movie is a rush of hope, and his goal is for people to leave the theatre feeling inspired to go out and make a difference.
"This one lifted the power of the church. It reminds the outside audience and people who may not be part of a church that the church is a safe place where you will be helped."
Erwin says allowing the church to be a hero in the movie was a big deal.
"It's so amazing to tell stories like this and to tell it on a big stage and continue to reach people outside of the church walls."
Ordinary Angels will hit theatres on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024.
