The Rural Municipality of Piney is gearing up for a busy year ahead with several projects set to continue into 2025. From improving transportation options to new housing initiatives and digital infrastructure, the local government is focused on making life better for residents and attracting visitors to this beautiful corner of Manitoba.
Martin Van Osch, the RM’s Chief Administrative Officer (CAO), highlighted the ongoing work on the Southeast Regional Transportation Initiative.
"As you can imagine, oftentimes projects don’t just end with a December 31st date," Van Osch explained. "We’re really looking for sustainable and cost-effective transportation options for residents here. This could mean car shares or car rides, not necessarily a bus system."
Van Osch notes that this project, which has been a priority for several years, is gaining traction, and other regions in the province are already taking notice.
One of the standout projects that emerged from these discussions is the Buffalo Point, Piney (BPP) Rent and Ride program. This initiative is a collaboration between Buffalo Point First Nation and the RM of Piney, offering carpooling and car-sharing options to support community groups, seniors, and youth.
"We now have two vehicles available through this program – a Toyota Sienna hybrid and a ProMaster van, which includes a wheelchair lift and ramp. This gives people in the far southeast better access to medical appointments and local communities like Steinbach and Winnipeg."
In addition to transportation, Van Osch says that the RM of Piney is excited about introducing electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in 2025. The first station will be set up in Buffalo Point, with two more planned for Vassar and Sprague.
"People with electric vehicles can now visit our region, enjoy outdoor activities, and experience the amazing wilderness we have to offer."
Housing is another area where the RM is making progress. Wayne Anderson, Reeve of the RM of Piney, spoke about the Southeast Community Services Coop’s efforts to bring a 20-room assisted living facility to Sprague.
"We received seed funding from CMHC and we're hopeful that the Manitoba government will step in to help get this project moving forward. This will be a huge boost for our region, especially with the shortage of housing for seniors."
While the facility's construction is still dependent on securing more funds, Anderson is optimistic about the future.
"We’ve been fundraising for 20 years, and we won’t stop until this facility is built."
The RM is also making strides in digital infrastructure. Valley Fiber is working to bring high-speed internet to homes across the southeast corner, with plans to expand the network in 2025.
"It’s a big job, but we're over halfway there. This is a major step forward for our communities, and we’re excited to see the benefits of reliable internet."
Van Osch also touched on the RM’s new membership with the Association of Manitoba Bilingual Municipalities (AMBM).
"It’s great to be part of a regional network that supports bilingualism and helps with economic development," he said. "We've already seen positive results, and it opens up opportunities for our community."
In terms of recreation, the RM is moving forward with the Recreation Master Plan, which will help support local volunteers who are crucial in delivering services.
"Recreation is key to community health and connection. Our goal is to find ways to support our volunteers, so they don’t feel overwhelmed."
Van Osch adds that the RM is also focusing on youth retention through initiatives like career symposiums and partnerships with local schools.
"We’re working hard to keep our youth connected to career opportunities here in the southeast."
Van Osch concludes with a hopeful message for the future.
"2024 was a year of reflection and finding efficiencies, but we’re looking forward to 2025 with optimism. We want our community to be inclusive, supportive, and a place where young families and new businesses can thrive. We’re excited about the opportunities ahead, and we’re proud to be part of Sunrise Corner."
As 2025 approaches, the RM of Piney is ready for another year of growth, collaboration, and improvements for its residents and visitors.
