If you're planning to escape the cold this winter on a lengthy vacation, you might want to safeguard your home while you're away.

The Grande Prairie RCMP want to provide the public with tips and best practices to protect your home. Here are some of their vacation security tips to consider:

-Use a security or alarm system if available or practical. Wide-angle cameras near external doors are especially useful

-Use automatic timers to turn on lights and radios

-Ensure that the snow is being shovelled while you are away

-Have adequate exterior lighting

-All doors and windows should be secured and locked with extra attention on basement and ground level openings

-Use curtains on windows to prevent easy visibility of the inside of your house

-Store seldom used items or valuables such as credit cards, identification and jewelry in a safe place

-Inform trusted neighbours or relatives of your vacation plans and where you can be reached. Leave a key with them so they can check your house

-Don't order merchandise for delivery when you are away. If you must, use package tracking and ensure someone picks it up off your porch after delivery

-Have a neighbour park a vehicle in your driveway, pick up your mail and move your garbage bin to the road

-If you come home and see a window broken or door ajar call 911 immediately. DO NOT enter the dwelling. If it looks suspicious do not hesitate to call police.

Crime and theft in the City of Grande Prairie is already up from last year at this time. Take the necessary precautions to keep your home and belongings secure while you're away.
