RM of Stuartburn Council is excited about the arrival of a new pumper truck for the Vita Fire Hall in 2026.

Reeve for the RM, Michelle Gawronsky says their region continues to grow and with it comes the need to update their aging equipment.

Gawronsky says they were able to secure a significant amount of funds through the Manitoba Economic Development and Infrastructure Program.

"The $555,000 grant allowed us to order a brand-new pumper truck for our fire department. The truck is expected to arrive in 2026, and the best part is it won't be a burden on our ratepayers because it's already fully funded."

Gawronsky noted that they will use the old pumper truck until the new one arrives.

"Yes, the current truck is getting outdated, and it's just time to replace it for safety reasons. We want to make sure our firefighters and community members are safe."

When asked about the funding for the new truck, Gawronsky was pleased to report that everything was in place.

"The previous council did a great job setting up a reserve fund for the fire department. We’ve been saving for this for a while, so the money is already there. Because of the council's foresight, we were prepared to purchase the new one and we want to keep adding to the fund so that when it’s time to replace the truck again."

Other notable highlights

Besides the new pumper truck, Gawronsky notes some highlights of 2024, were the improvements that were made in the community.

"One of the big wins was the launch of Valley Fiber's service in the RM. They offered their services in the town of Vita, providing high-speed internet connections to homes as part of a test project. We're excited to see how it works and how much quicker the hookups will be."

Other notable highlights included the expansion of a series of nature tours called, "Adventures with Nature Norm".

"These tours are possible because of a partnership with the Nature Conservancy of Canada. They have been a big hit with locals and visitors alike. Nature Norm’s snowshoeing, birdwatching, and Tall Grass Prairie tours are definitely worth checking out."

On the infrastructure front, Gawronsky noted several road improvement efforts that are underway.

"We did some rock removal projects around our transfer station and other municipal roads to help improve road conditions during spring run-offs. We're hopeful that it will make a big difference come thawing season."

The RM also completed road paving in the town of Vita, addressing cracks, holes, and other road issues to make the area safer and smoother for drivers.

What's in store for 2025?

Gawronsky notes, the municipality is focused on more ambitious projects in the coming year.

"One exciting project is the Sundown Ridge Feasibility Study, which we’ve received a $70,000 grant for. This study will look at creating one of the largest water reservoirs in Manitoba."

The RM is also pushing ahead with the road upgrade project for PR 201. "We've received reassurances from the minister that this project is still on track, and we’re hoping to see work begin in the spring," she said.

Gawronsky says that another priority for the RM in 2025 is improving cell service. "We've been working hard on this for years, and it's still a challenge. We’re pushing for better coverage in the area, which is a need that’s been here as long as I can remember."

The RM is also addressing the need for upgrades to its lagoon, with ongoing work with engineers to figure out the best way forward.

"We want to hear from our ratepayers."

As Reeve of the RM of Stuartburn, Gawrsonsky notes the importance of community feedback.

"We want to hear from our ratepayers about what they want for the future of the municipality. It’s important for us to listen and understand what they see as priorities," she said.

Gawronsky says, 2025 is shaping up to be another busy year for the RM of Stuartburn, with major infrastructure projects, improved safety measures, and continued efforts to meet the needs of its residents.

"It’s a great time to be in the RM of Stuartburn, and we’re excited to see these projects move forward and to continue working closely with our community."

As Stuartburn continues to grow and improve, it’s clear that the municipality is committed to making sure that its residents are safe, connected, and heard.
