Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is stepping up efforts to address ongoing concerns about excessive vehicle noise throughout the city. Each spring, complaints increase—primarily related to vehicles with inadequate mufflers, modified equipment, and disruptive driving behaviors such as stunting and over-acceleration.
In 2024 alone, Peace Officers issued 160 tickets for vehicle noise violations under the Alberta Traffic Safety Act. These infractions carry fines and may require the offender to provide proof of corrective action within 14 days.
To enhance enforcement, Peace Officers have received specialized training focused on modified exhaust systems and noise-related vehicle issues. They will lead both education and enforcement initiatives aimed at reducing disruptive vehicle noise. The Community Standards Unit of the Grande Prairie Police Service will also be supporting this effort.
“Our main priority is to ensure that all residents enjoy a peaceful and safe community,” says Peace Officer Sergeant Ryan Hoffman. “While we recognize that many drivers take pride in their vehicles, it's important to remember that excessive noise, especially from modified exhausts, can significantly disrupt neighborhoods. We're committed to working with the public to reduce these disturbances."
Under City of Grande Prairie Bylaw C-1103C, it is illegal to create or cause excessive, unnecessary noise from a motor vehicle. This includes the improper use of engine retarder brakes and overly loud signaling devices. In addition, the provincial Vehicle Equipment Regulation restricts the installation and use of aftermarket vehicle components that contribute to increased noise.
Drivers operating vehicles that generate excessive noise at any time may face fines starting at $162, with some cases requiring a mandatory court appearance.
Residents are encouraged to report noisy vehicles by contacting Enforcement Services at 780-830-5790 or by emailing es_contact@gppolice.com.
