Border Land School Division (BLSD) officials are keeping an eye on the wildfire burning in the RM of Piney around Carrick, Badger, St. Labre and Florze.
While none of the people evacuated from Carrick or Badger are students or staff from the division, that is not the case for staff living in Woodridge who were evacuated Wednesday evening, noted Superintendent Krista Curry. She says the division has told staff and families to stay safe and follow evacuation orders, adding they'll be checking in with those affected to see how they can be supported.
Meanwhile, none of BLSD's bus routes in the area have been impacted by the flames and smoke, and Ross L Grey School in Sprague remains open.
"But certainly, there's a lot of people on edge as winds change and we know that these fire situations can change very quickly," added Curry.
With the wildfire still burning, Curry says BLSD officials remain in close contact with the R.M. of Piney and the provincial emergency response team.
"Just to make sure that we have the most accurate information in as real-time as we can so that we can plan forward if we need to change routes, find locations for families or find spaces with more fresh air if there are people that are struggling to breath if there's lots of smoke, etc."
And, if there is a need for further evacuations, Curry says the division is ready to help when and where it can, including providing school buses to relocate people.
