When Korina and Michael Rousell took ownership of Oxbow Country Golf Course just outside Strathmore, they weren’t just buying a business – they were embracing a new way of life.
“It was definitely a better feel,” says Korina. “Moving from the city to a smaller community was exactly what I was looking for.”
Today, the couple operate Oxbow as a welcoming nine-hole golf course that blends small-town charm with a laid-back, community-focused atmosphere.
Prairie charm meets peaceful surroundings
Set against a prairie landscape with a large central pond and an abundance of local birdlife, Oxbow is more than just a place to swing a club. “We have quite a few people who come just to walk or watch the birds,” says Michael. “It’s very family-oriented.”
Michael, who acts as superintendent and president, is often found working alongside their maintenance team out on the course. They often works into the evening to ensure the greens are ready for the next day.
“There’s no better time than at night,” he says. “That way we don’t have to worry about getting somebody wet.”
An inclusive experience for everyone
From seasoned golfers to beginners, young families to retirees, Oxbow Country Golf Course welcomes players of all ages and experience levels.
“We get every type of person out there,” says Korina. “The really good golfers, the people just starting out – it’s all fun. It keeps you on your toes.”
While Oxbow does offer a limited number of season passes, the course primarily caters to public players, ensuring that everyone feels at home.
“Everybody’s welcome,” says Korina. “And with a pass, you don’t have to pay each time. It just makes it easy.”
Rooted in passion and community
Korina’s connection to Oxbow Country Golf Course goes back to its earliest days. She was sent to the course by a Calgary-based development company after gaining experience at Gull Lake. After several years managing Oxbow, she and Michael had the opportunity to purchase it themselves.
The transition from employee to owner has been a welcome challenge for the couple. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s very enjoyable,” Michael says. “Because we have kids now, it’s such a great quality of life.”
Korina agrees. “I love the people that come in. I probably spend more time talking than I do working,” she laughs. “It’s the kind of place where everyone can feel like they belong.” Book your tee-time now, at oxbowcountrygc.ca.
