Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has resigned as the United Conservative Party (UCP) leader.

The UCP announced the results of a leadership review on a livestream from an invite-only event near Calgary Wednesday (May 18) evening. Ballots were cast via mail by UCP members.

Earlier, Kenney said he wasn't concerned with the vote, adding even if he received a slim majority of 50 plus one, he would stay on as leader.

"I've never lost an election, and I don't plan on doing so now."

After the ballots were counted, Kenney received a 51.4 per cent approval rating.

Despite the majority vote, Kenney has stepped down, ending his five-year career as leader of the UCP.
