The Strathmore High School Spartans Football team (1-1) is preparing to face the George McDougall High School Mustangs tomorrow in Airdrie!
After a tough 44-14 loss against the Cardston Cougars, the Spartans are ready to get back out there and try to get back in the win column. While it would be easy to sulk after a big loss, Head Coach Danny Warrack says the team is taking the loss as a learning opportunity and using it as motivation to be better.
"I think the mood is alright after that loss, a lot of the guys are like 'wow, we gotta get it together if we want to compete with some of these good teams," he said.
Warrack said Cardston was an incredibly strong team and expects the Mustangs to be somewhere in between the Spartans and Cardston. One thing Strathmore will have to work on to win is tackling, as Warrack said the Mustangs have one of the better running backs in the league in Paul Condon.
Even though the Spartans lost big to the Cougars, Warrack says there were good things in that game that they'll have to build on to earn their second win of the year.
"We got a couple of receivers playing really well, Bode Pettifer and C.J Nelson. We need to get the other receivers and running backs on the same page, I think there are a couple of guys who could pick up their game and help this team out a little more. I don't want to build our offense around one or two players, we need everyone contributing, and there just hasn't been enough from a few guys right now."
Between that Cardston game and the upcoming Mustangs game, the Spartans had seven practices to work on improving things like tackling and red-zone execution. Win or lose, Warrack says he expects the team to go out there and give it their all.
