With cooler weather during the day and even cooler temperatures at night, we are reminded of a few things we can do that will improve the efficiency of our furnaces.

By taking proactive measures, Darren Krentz with GLT Heating and Cooling says we reduce the likelihood of having furnace trouble when we are in greatest need of some heat.

The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts a chilly winter for southern Manitoba, suggesting we could get some of the coldest weather as early as mid-November.

Cold spells put extra strain on furnaces which can lead to breakdowns.

“The number one thing is always make sure that the air filter is clean and ready for the season,” he says. “If it's plugged up and restricted it's going to affect the way your equipment operates. And if you haven't had your furnace cleaned sometime, especially if it's a gas furnace, I would recommend getting it serviced. Cleaning of the burners and making sure everything works efficiently is going to save you money in the long run.”

While it is advised to have annual check-ups for furnaces, Krentz says it is a requirement in some situations.

“If you've installed a new piece of equipment and it’s still under warranty, the manufacturer will require to have proof that you've actually looked after your equipment.”

Krentz also has some suggestions on things we can do around the home to make the best use of the heat provided by the furnace.

“Go around and check to make sure all the vents are open correctly in the rooms so that everything flows properly,” he says. “Make sure that the return air grills in your living room or in your bedroom or not blocked by anything. Just make sure it's operating properly. And any signs that is not working correctly, call a service technician and correct it before it becomes a big problem.”

The forecast indicates daytime highs will be in the single digits for the next few days, with low temperatures around zero and dipping to minus 6 for Sunday night.
