The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) is mourning the deaths of two officers who were shot and killed in the line of duty on Thursday morning (Mar. 16).
In a brief media availability, EPS Chief Dale McFee confirmed that the two constables killed were 35-year-old Travis Jordan and 30-year-old Brett Ryan.
Jordan had been with EPS for over eight years of service and Ryan served just over five years.
"Constable Jordan and Ryan were valued members of our EPS family and they worked side-by-side with us every day in service to our community," said McFee.
"This is an extremely tragic day.”
McFee said that at about 12:47 a.m. both the constables responded to a family dispute at an apartment building located near 114 Ave and 132 Street.
"The two patrol members went inside the building, approached the suite and were shot by a male subject," said McFee. "At this time, all indications are [the officers] did not have a chance to discharge their firearms."
McFee said that EPS believes the man responsible for the shooting is dead, having died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
EPS has confirmed that a woman related to the suspect is also in the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
An investigation into the incident is currently ongoing; EPS said that further details will be provided when they are confirmed.
This is the first line-of-duty death for the EPS since 2015.
