Pat Porter Meals on Wheels ensures individuals from Steinbach and Grunthal receive healthy meals and have an opportunity to connect with the community.

Audrey Harder of Pat Porter Meals on Wheels explains meals can be delivered to their home or join other community members at the Pat Porter Active Living Centre (PPALC).

“Our biggest concern for people is isolation, and so at least there's once a day or once a week, that they get to see somebody, and we get to check and connect with them as well,” Harder says, noting over the past years, they have been able to provide a meal for 50 to 60 people daily.

She says they aim to keep nutritional value atop the mind and offer affordable meals.

"We know people are eating healthy. They're not eating from cans, they're not eating high sodium. We're keeping an eye on those things, and it's fantastic to see the people be able to take that meal, and actually, a lot of people have lunch with the soup and whatever else is with it and then they have a meal for supper as well. So, it's really good to be able to provide that much food for $8," she explains.

To help with their program, funds raised from the Taste of Summer Charity Barbecue on Wednesday, August 23, will be donated to Pat Porter Meals on Wheels. The community is invited for a hotdog lunch on the corner of Main and Lumber, in front of the Steinbach Credit Union. A minimum of a two-dollar donation is required for lunch, but more are encouraged to support Pat Porter Meals on Wheels.

“With prices going up, it's more important than ever that we do these fundraising,” she says.

Harder encourages those interested in learning more about the program or receiving meals to call them at (204) 320-4600 or visit their website.

The Taste of Summer Charity Barbecue is held every Wednesday in July and August at the Steinbach Credit Union, on the corner of Main and Lumber. Community members are invited from 11 AM to 1 PM, or until supplies last, to have lunch and support local charities and their missions.
