Portage under Heat Warning as humidex soars

Environment Canada issued a Heat Warning for Portage la Prairie as of 3:39 p.m. Thursday.

The warning was triggered as humidex values are expected to reach 38 degrees for the next three days.

Environment Canada says that extreme heat affects everyone; they suggest citizens watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty, and stay in a cool place.

21-year-old man assaults Treherne RCMP officers during arrest

An assault case at a residence in Cypress River led to multiple RCMP officers being assaulted.

The police report states that on May 27, at 11:45 a.m., Treherne RCMP responded to an assault case.

Officers attended and located the victim, an adult woman, with minor injuries.

RCMP say they located the male suspect and advised him he was under arrest, and when officers were attempting to handcuff the man, he became combative and proceeded to assault them.

Speeder goes 171 km/h in 100 zone on Highway 16

A 17-year-old driver is facing the consequences of speeding after an incident last Friday.

According to the RCMP, the 17-year-old was clocked in at 171 km/h in a 100 zone on Highway 16 in the RM of Westlake-Gladstone.

The driver admitted to the speed, explaining they were “Late for work at a carnival.”

They were issued a $979 fine and a serious offense notice for license review with MPI.  

RCMP respond to fatal collision in Gimli

Manitoba RCMP are sharing heartbreaking news from Sunday morning.

According to the police report, on May 28, at 6:00 a.m., Gimli RCMP responded to a single-vehicle rollover on Highway 9, at the intersection of 9th Avenue, in the community of Sandy Hook.

Officers arrived on the scene and observed that a vehicle with two female occupants had been travelling southbound when it left the roadway, entered the ditch and rolled.

Manitoba RCMP officer spit on and assaulted while off duty  

An off duty RCMP officer got an unpleasant surprise on Thursday. 

According to Police, on May 25th, at 3:20 p.m, an off-duty RCMP officer in the community of Little Grand Rapids was out for a jog when a man approached the officer, spat on the officer, and threatened to throw a bicycle at the officer. The officer, being off-duty, did not enter into a confrontation with the male, but met with the local Band Constable to report it.

Series of vandalism leaves Portage RCMP searching for answers

Portage la Prairie RCMP is looking for further information regarding two vandalism incidents that took place in 150-minute span.

The Police Report states that on May 15th, at 11:41 p.m., Portage RCMP took a call regarding vandalism in the 800 block of 3rd Street NW in Portage la Prairie. Officers made patrols of the area, but the suspect was not located. The suspect reportedly tossed a piece of wood at the house, striking and breaking a window at this address.
