Dakota Plains teen arrested for Break and Enter in community school

A Break and Enter in Dakota Plains First Nation was reported to Portage la Prairie RCMP in the community’s school.  The incident occurred on Friday, June 24th.

The suspect caused significant damage to the school as well as property inside the school. The suspect also destroyed the traditional medicine from one office and stole the Eagle Feather. Officers were provided information that led to the arrest of 19-year-old Jordan Smoke of Dakota Plains First Nation.

Simplot Central Park faces vandalism

The play structure at Simplot Central Park has been part of some malicious mischief as the structure has been spray-painted with graffiti.

This is the second time since the spring that the park has faced some kind of vandalism, with glass being splattered all over the splash pad just beside the play structure in May.

RCMP arrest man following assault on officer and three others

Treherne RCMP have arrested a man after he assaulted a police officer.

Police say on June 25th, they received a call asking for support at a provincial agency in the 200 block of Vanzile Street in Treherne. When the officer arrived, he was told that the man had assaulted three people already.

The 47-year-old man from Winnipeg Beach did not cooperate with the officer, which led to him resisting arrest and assaulting the police officer. The officer was then able to restrain the man and get him into a police car. 

Portage RCMP charge multiple people following the seizure of drugs and firearms

Portage la Prairie RCMP executed a search warrant last Friday in the city, which led to four people getting arrested and or charged following the seizure of drugs and firearms.

Police say that on June 24, due to an ongoing investigation, officers with the Portage la Prairie General Investigative Section (GIS) conducted a search on a residence on Mobile Street in Portage.

As a result of the search, officers seized a number of drugs, including methamphetamine, cocaine, crack cocaine, along with firearms, cash and drug-related paraphernalia. 

Multiple road closures impacting Portage today

The City of Portage la Prairie has announced that two road closures will be taking place today.

The railway crossing on 3rd Street NE will be closed as of 8 a.m. today for repairs by CN Rail. They intend to finish and have the road open again at 5 p.m.

Crescent Road West will also be closing starting at 9 a.m. due to Hydro repairs. The closure on Crescent Road will stretch from 1st Street SW to 11th Street SW. The plan is for the road to reopen by the end of the day today.

Rotary Club holds last meeting of their fiscal year

The Rotary Club of Portage la Prairie held their last meeting for the fiscal year of 2021-2022 on Tuesday, June 28th.

Rotary PR Director and past president Preston Meier says he is proud of the club's accomplishments throughout the year.

Meier points out that July 1st will be the start of the 2022-2022 year for the club and what they have on deck.

Treherne Ag Society receives historical award 

When you make it to 100 years of anything, there is no doubt that you have been through a lot and seen it all, but for the Treherne Agricultural Society, something new was added to their resume over the weekend.

Josie Robinson, an employee of Treherne Agricultural for over two decades, was presented with a Manitoba Historical Society award over the weekend on behalf of the Agricultural Society.

Robinson explains that the Manitoba Historical Society presented the award to organizations over 100 years old.

Portage RCMP charge two Winnipeg men with multiple offences

Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a report of theft at a business in the 2400 block of Saskatchewan Avenue, which ended up leading to much more than just theft charges 

On June 25th, around 11:50 am, Portage Officers were advised that two men had entered an establishment, filled up a shopping cart with items and ran out of the store without paying.  

An employee confronted the suspects in the parking lot and got physically assaulted as he tried to prevent them from loading up the stolen items.  

Portage Mutual Insurance donates to multiple organizations

Portage Mutual Insurance is lending a helping hand to organizations in the community.

They've donated $40,000 total to six different groups in Portage.

President and CEO John Mitchell visited the Family Resource Centre, where he presented a cheque for $5,000. He then made his way to the Community Foundation of Portage & District and, while the physical size of the cheque was much smaller, the dollar amount was the same.

RCMP issues water safety reminder

Manitoba RCMP is reminding everyone about summer water activities that should accompany safety standards.

Boaters and those who use a paddleboard, kayak, or canoe, are asked to remember that water temperatures are still cold even though air temperatures are rising. Be aware of the wind and your surroundings and always wear a lifejacket or Personal Floatation Device (PFD).

On June 18, two young women, from Winnipeg, who were paddle boarding without lifejackets, had to be rescued out on Lake Manitoba after they were unable to return to shore due to the strong winds.
