Grim numbers emerge from Saskatchewan’s rural roads
A disturbing trend has been escalating on rural roads in the province.
Saskatchewan RCMP officers responded to 77 fatal collisions that resulted in 88 deaths last year.
Injuries resulting from collisions also increased as there were 271 collisions involving serious injuries in 2024, up 43 per cent from the previous year. These collisions resulted in 321 people seriously injured, up 48 per cent from the previous year.
Humboldt's Brad Lauer named to Team Canada's coaching staff for the World Juniors
Hockey Canada announced on the weekend the coaching staff that will lead the Canadian squad at the 2026 World Junior Hockey Championships in Minnesota.
One member of the staff is Humboldt’s Brad Lauer, who will serve as an assistant coach.
Marysburg Royals look to add to their storied legacy with another provincial championship
The Marysburg Royals will try and stake their claim as the top team in Saskatchewan this weekend as they compete in the Senior AA Tier Provincial 1 Championships in Saskatoon.
This year’s event will feature seven teams including the Royals, which is something that Curtis Strueby of the Royals is pleased with.
“It’s a good sign for senior baseball at our level in our province,” he said, “should be a good competitive weekend.”
Humboldt and George Gordon First Nation partner for long-term economic growth through national program
The City of Humboldt and George Gordon First Nation are embarking on a new partnership aimed at long-term economic growth and relationship building through the Community Economic Development Initiative (CEDI). The two communities are among eight partnerships across Canada selected to participate in the three-year national program from 2024 to 2027.

Saskatchewan government fulfills $2 million pledge to Saskatchewan Food Banks
$1 million will be heading to Food Banks in the province as a part of the $2 million commitment the Saskatchewan Government pledged.
The announcement was initially made in July of 2024, with the first installment provided to the Food Banks of Saskatchewan last August. The remaining $1 million will be distributed to the food banks next month to agencies based on the population and average food bank usage of the communities they serve.
Local athletes heading to Newfoundland for 2025 Canada Summer Games
Team Saskatchewan held their official kickoff on Monday with the announcement of all the athletes that will be competing in the upcoming Canada Summer Games in St. John’s Newfoundland.
Hayden Kot from Regina was named Saskatchewan’s flag bearer at the opening ceremonies at the kickoff. Kot will be competing in both basketball and volleyball at the games.

Humboldt and Melfort area groups receive over $148,000 from charitable gaming grants
More than 1,000 community groups and organizations in the province were the latest recipients of $2.49 million from charitable gaming grants from Lotteries and Gaming Saskatchewan (LGS) during the first quarter of the 2025-26 fiscal year.
Groups and organizations within the Humboldt and Melfort area received more than $148,000.
