The great maple bug migration: Entomologist explains these unexpected fall guests

A common sight this time of year is the boxelder bug, more commonly known as a maple bug. James Tansey, Provincial Insect and Vertebrate Pest Management Specialist, says the reason for their numbers this time of year is due to their preparations for the cold weather. 

SaskPower sentencing adjourned for further deliberation

Last May SaskPower was found guilty of three charges regarding the death of two powerline technicians in October of 2020. 

Sentencing was scheduled to occur this morning in Weyburn; however, it was adjourned to October 18th as the judge required more deliberation.  

We will provide updates when sentencing occurs.

Province aims to improve financial literacy among youth with new course requirement

The Government of Saskatchewan is implementing a Financial Literacy 10 course that will be required for high school graduation. MLA and Minister of Education Jeremy Cockrill says the decision to implement the course was a result of input from students, families, educators, and indiviuals in the business sector. 

MP Dr. Robert Kitchen comments on the defeat of confidence motion against Liberal government

The House of Commons sat for the first time since the NDP ended its Supply and Confidence deal with the Liberal Party. There, a confidence motion was put forward by the conservative party. MP for Souris Moose Mountain, Robert Kitchen, reports the basic confidence motion has been defeated.

Transportation supervisor for the Southeast Cornerstone Public School Division, Andy Verhaeghe, says a key part of bus safety comes down to the conduct of students on board. Rules for busing students are posted in every bus. 

Tips for tree maintenance in fall: More than just pruning

With winter around the corner people are preparing to winterize. Agrologist Sherri Roberts says this practice should extend to trees as well. 

With elm pruning bans lifted, Roberts reminds homeowners to ensure tree branches are trimmed around the home, especially the roof. 

“If you've got any branches that are extending out over your roof, get them cut off, because you are risking your shingle health, which is then in turn risking your whole roof health, and once you lose that roof, I mean, hey, your house is going to end up an absolute mess.”
