Swift Current lacrosse star shines at international tournament, leads team to victory!

Team Canada came out undefeated at the inaugural International Indoor Junior Lacrosse (IIJL) Commonwealth Cup in Melbourne, Australia which took place from March 15 to 18. 

One individual that played a significant role in Canada’s triumphant performance is 19-year-old, Shane Friesen, from Swift Current. 

Friesen, who has since returned from down under, said that representing Canada, is an experience he will never forget. 

Swift Current crews battle blaze

The Swift Current Fire Department was dispatched to a building fire on Friday, at 3:52 p.m.

When crews arrived at the fire, on 5th Avenue Northwest, smoke and flames were exiting the rear of the building.

After entering the building and finding no occupants, firefighters battled the blaze.

Homes on either side of the fire were protected with cooling water and a layer of fire-retardant foam.

Heavy damage was inflicted on the involved building.

There were no injuries and the incident is currently under investigation.

 

 

 

Over 4,000 speeders in latest SGI results

It appears that many Saskatchewan residents are in a hurry to get places according to SGI’s results for February’s Traffic Safety Spotlight, which was centred around speeding. 

The results showed that over 4,000 tickets were issued last month for speed-related offences throughout the province. 

Manager of Media Relations for SGI, Tyler McMurchy, said this demonstrates how speeding is a prevalent issue all year long.

In 2022, Saskatchewan saw its largest population growth in over a century, according to new population estimates from Statistics Canada. 

The estimates show that last year, Saskatchewan’s population grew to 1,214,618 people, an increase of 29,307. 

Premier Scott Moe explained in a press release, that there are multiple reasons for the population spike, including job opportunities and high quality of life.

March 17

4:14 PM - report of a vehicle backing into a business on the 400 block of South Service Road East the day prior, causing damage. Officers attended the business and reviewed video footage but were unable to identify the responsible party.

4:24 PM - report of a female sitting on the shoulder of the #1 Highway. Police were able to locate the female and provided her with a courtesy ride to her destination.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation calls for balanced budget

Last week, The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) called on the Saskatchewan government to balance the provincial budget, cut taxes, and control spending in the provincial budget, which will be unveiled in Legislature later this afternoon. 

Gage Haubrich, the CTF’s Prairie Director, said that the government has no reason not to balance the budget this year. 

“The province can’t keep piling debt onto the backs of taxpayers and future generations,” he stated. 

Canadian sex offender pleads not guilty in United States

Convicted Canadian sex offender, Benjamin Martin Moore, who is currently facing charges on both sides of the border, recently pled not guilty to his charges in South Dakota. 

Moore, who resided in Eastend at the time, became a focal point of RCMP efforts in early August 2022, after an amber alert was released involving his common-law partner's children. 

He is alleged to have driven through a barbed wire fence with the two children and their mother at the international border crossing straight south of Climax.
