Subject of Canada-wide warrant apprehended in Saskatoon

The Saskatchewan RCMP Warrant Enforcement Suppression Team (WEST) received a request from the Saskatoon Integrated Intelligence Unit (SIIU) late last month to locate 36-year-old David Corte, who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant in relation to multiple outstanding charges issued in Quebéc.

In September 2022, Corte failed to comply with conditions related to his release before fleeing Quebéc.

The initial investigation led police to believe that Corte was likely in Saskatchewan.

Coldest Night of the Year returns for another triumphant year

Swift Current’s third annual Coldest Night of the Year fundraiser marched through Swift Current this weekend to raise essential funds for the Swift Current Community Youth Initiative (SCCYI). 

The proceeds from this year’s event will go directly towards counselling and fundraising aspects of The Centre, such as the free counselling and mentoring services that they offer. 

RCMP seeking stolen truck

The public is being asked for assistance by the Swift Current Rural RCMP to locate the person(s) responsible for the theft of a truck.

The theft took place in the town of Cabri sometime between the night of Saturday, February 18, and Monday, February 20.

The stolen truck is described as a grey 1999 GMC Sierra 1500 it was stolen from a business parking lot within the town of Cabri.

Franchise Frenzy for Broncos limited time re-brand

The Swift Current Broncos are shaking things up for their home game against the Moose Jaw Warriors this Saturday. 

Executive Vice President of Business Operations for the Broncos, Nathan MacDonald, explained that the Broncos will be re-branding for one night only as a way to connect with the surrounding community. 

MacDonald added that the re-brand to the Lake Diefenbaker Slough Sharks was chosen based on votes from fans. 

Cold warning spreads through the southwest

Environment Canada has issued an extreme warning for several communities in the southwest area.

Extreme wind chill values in the -40 to -45 range are expected to return tonight and continue into Thusday as a bitterly cold Arctic airmass lingers over the region.

Temperatures are expected to return to near seasonal values this weekend.

Swift Current's first Family Festival a resounding success

Families of all ages gathered at the Stockade yesterday morning for the first Family Festival in Swift Current. 

The event, which was hosted by the City of Swift Current’s Tots Play Program in conjunction with Family Fun Week, featured games, face painting, crafts, and more. 

Val Choofoo, In Motion community facilitator, explained that while Family Fun Week is not new to the community, this is the first time a festival has been included in the plans. 

Charges laid after Valentines Day arrest

One Pennant resident was the recipient of something far less sweet than chocolate this Valentine's Day.

On February 14, 42-year-old, Trent Zeller, was arrested after being located passed out in a running vehicle which was stopped in a residential area of Swift Current.

As a result of subsequent investigation and a search of the vehicle, Swift Current Municipal RCMP and the Saskatchewan Trafficking Response Team (STRT), officers discovered quantities of suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, cocaine, other drugs, quantities of cash and drug paraphernalia.

UPDATED: Southwest affected by down power line

Update written 7:20 a.m. on February 14:

Lines were repaired with power restored around 5 p.m. yesterday evening, according to SaskTel's Twitter account.

According to SaskPower's Twitter account, the power is currently out in South and southeast and southwest of Shaunavon, Dollard and surrounding areas.

At 1:07 p.m., a tweet stated that crews had been dispatched and were working to determine the cause of the outage.
