Miami Fire and Rescue respond to shed fire

Miami Fire and Rescue was called out Friday afternoon around 12:20pm to a reported grass and structure fire northeast of town.

According to a social media post, when crews arrived they acted quickly, but with how dry things are currently the small shed was a loss and was later torn down to be fully extinguished.

"Thank you to Rosebank colony for providing extra water, and to the home owners for making food/drinks to keep us going," stated the post. "Always appreciated!"

The department also issued a reminder to area residents.

Liquor, unmarked tobacco, and a $2,542 fine

A traffic stop took a turn earlier this month when a driver sped past officers, yelling and revving his engine — behaviour that eventually led to a roadside prohibition, several fines, and the seizure of his vehicle. 

Winkler Police Chief Ryan Hunt said officers were pulled over with an unrelated vehicle on April 19 when the incident occurred. 

GVSD prepares for province-wide early reading screening initiative

Garden Valley School Division is getting ready to roll out a new provincial initiative designed to boost early literacy. Starting in the 2026-2027 school year, all students from kindergarten to Grade 4 across Manitoba will be assessed twice a year using new reading screening tools, the goal being to catch any literacy challenges early, helping students get the support they need right away.

On stage, they are Jane and Kyle, and the Canadian fiddle champions are known for creating a unique sound characterized by lush twin fiddle harmonies, intricate arrangements, and heartfelt compositions.

Jane grew up in Winnipeg, while Cory is from the Ottawa area. The two met while attending the University of Ottawa's School of Music for Classical Violin, and that's how the partnership began.

Liberals lose one seat in Quebec after validation process

The federal riding of Terrebonne in Quebec has gone from the Liberals' win column back to the Bloc Québécois after a postelection vote validation process.

Bloc candidate Nathalie Sinclair-Desgagné, who had represented the riding since 2021, said in a social media post that she came out with a lead of 44 votes and that a judicial recount will take place.

"For someone to be officially elected, you have to wait until the end of this process," Sinclair-Desgagné wrote in French. "I hope to have the honour of representing Terrebonne again in the coming years."

'The support is phenomenal'; Food for All raises $2,750 for Rhineland and Area Foodbank

The community came out in droves yesterday for the second in a series of Food for All Events, sponsored by Rede-Made Noodles, in support of the vital work being done by the Rhineland and Area Foodbank in Altona.

Broadcasting live from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Sun Valley Co-op food store in Altona, the event encouraged community members to drop off non-perishable food items and cash donations to help feed local families in need.

In total, the day generated $2,750 and many bags of non-perishable food items. 

Alberta MP to step aside to allow Pierre Poilievre to run for seat in Parliament

Conservative MP Damien Kurek is set to step aside to allow Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre to run in a byelection in the Battle River—Crowfoot riding in Alberta.

Kurek says he is "temporarily" stepping aside as MP for the riding, which he has held since 2019.

The Conservative party confirms that Poilievre will run in the Battle River—Crowfoot byelection once it's called.
